OCEANSIDE - Beatriz Mendez, 74, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007.
Born Feb. 27, 1932, in Mexico, she lived in Oceanside for 29 years.
Mrs. Mendez is survived by her husband of 34 years, Benny R. Mendez of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Frank and Nancy Hernandez of Los Angeles; sisters and brother-in-law Maria Teresa Blamey of Murrieta and Jessica and Carlos Mendoza of La Mirada; and four grandchildren.
Visitation and viewing are scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. and rosary recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel, 1999 El Camino Real in Oceanside. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at St. Francis Catholic Church, 525 W. Vista Way in Vista. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Valentino Mangaya, 70
OCEANSIDE - Valentino M. Mangaya, 70, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, at Pleasant Care of Vista.
Born May 18, 1936, in Bataan, Philippines, he lived in Oceanside for 17 years. He retired in 1989 from the Naval Air Station in Subic Bay, Philippines. He was in the U.S. Navy Civil Service.
Mr. Mangaya is survived by his wife of 46 years, Corazon Mangaya of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Butch and Ella Mangaya, Ronnie and Erlin Mangaya and Abner and Janet Mangaya, all of Oceanside; daughters and son-in-law Ma Corazon and Jun Alma Jose and Marissa Mangaya, all of Oceanside; and 10 grandchildren.
Viewing is scheduled from 9 a.m. to the funeral service at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, 1999 El Camino Real in Oceanside.

Emma Magdaleno, 82
OCEANSIDE - Emma G. Magdaleno, 82, died of Alzheimer's disease Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Sept. 15, 1924, in New Mexico, she lived in Oceanside for 63 years.
Mrs. Magdaleno was preceded in death by her husband, Josie Ruben Magdaleno. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Stephan Magdaleno of Los Angeles, Ralph and Louanne Magdaleno of Oceanside, and Ruben and Sandy Magdaleno of Gaston, S.C.; sisters and brothers-in-law Jenny and Junior Jones of Oceanside, and Jose and Eddie Gutierrez and Mary and Danny Morales, all of Los Angeles; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. today, Feb. 24, at Oceanside Mortuary. A private cremation is planned.

OCEANSIDE - Luz T. Olson Mullin, 83, died of natural causes Monday, Feb. 19, 2007.
Born Sept. 20, 1923, in Tacloban, Leyte, Philippines, she lived in Oceanside for 26 years. She was a professional seamstress and a bridal gown specialist.
Mrs. Mullin was preceded in death by her husband, Myrle Mylo Olson Sr., in 1987. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Mylo and Sandy Olson of Burleson, Texas, and Dave and Tammy Olson of Douglasville, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law Lucy and Mike Piccirillo of Palmdale, Evelyn and Bill Lamden of San Diego, and Cindy and Alex Martin of Oceanside; sisters Gloria Calomay of Escondido, Dolores Talana of Van Nuys and Betty Alcova of Baguio, Philippines; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

OCEANSIDE - Sylvia Weber, 92, died of heart failure Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, in La Jolla.
Born Dec. 1, 1914, in Chicago, she lived in Oceanside for six years. She established the first multiple sclerosis chapter in Los Angeles. She was a member of ORT in Encinitas.
Mrs. Weber was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Franklin C. Weber, in 1990. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan Weber Zissman and Michael Zissman of Northbrook, Ill.; sister and brother-in-law Lila and Cris Crespin of Corona Del Mar; and two grandchildren.

ESCONDIDO - Agnes C. Zurbriggen, 97, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007.
Born March 10, 1909, in Lovinac, Croatia, she lived in Escondido for 30 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Zurbriggen was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lewis Zurbriggen. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Knipstein of Escondido; sons Donald Zurbriggen of San Antonio and James Zurbriggen of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the Church of the Resurrection in Escondido. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park, 2640 Glenridge Road in Escondido.

ESCONDIDO - Edward Fox, 80, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at his home.
Born March 13, 1926, in Cranwell, Okla., he lived in Escondido for 16 years. He was a foreman for American Standard for 32 years. He was a carpenter for Palos Verdes School District for 64 years. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the American Legion and the Light of the Valley Church. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Mr. Fox is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alta Fox of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Jeanette Fox of Temecula; daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Mike Thompson of Reno, Nev.; brothers Paul Dean of Cortez, Colo., and Gary Dean of Crawford, Colo.; and three grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, at McLeod Mortuary, 1919 E. Valley Parkway in Escondido. SAN DIEGO - Brendan Cornelius McNabb, 48, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007.
He was born May 6, 1958, in Armagh, Ireland. He was a civil engineer for 26 years.
Mr. McNabb is survived by his wife, Anne-Marie McNabb of San Diego; son Caolan McNabb of San Diego; mother Margaret McNabb of Ireland; sister Eithne McNabb of Ireland; and brothers Colum McNabb of England, and Padraig McNabb of San Diego.

Born Feb. 9, 1924, in Strong City, Okla., he lived in San Marcos for 30 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Ballenger is survived by his wife of 40 years, Maria N. Ballenger of San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law Tom and Doloris Ballenger of San Diego; daughters-in-law Jody L. and Robert Brents of Spokane, Wash., Julia and John Farrell of Rockford, Ill., and Lizabeth and Byron Evans of Tooele, Utah; brother Bill Gatten of Northridge; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Bobbie Cunningham, 65
CARLSBAD - Bobbie Lynnette Cunningham, 65, died of cancer and myesthenia gravis Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at her home.
Born Sept. 1, 1941, in Los Angeles, she lived in Carlsbad for four years. She retired in 2000 as a secretary for the Huntington Beach Police Department. She was a member of the Pacific Breeze Baptist Church of Carlsbad, the Meridian Chapter of the Eastern Star, two chapters of the Embroiderers' Guild of America, and the Sewing Guild.
Ms. Cunningham was preceded in death by her father, Robert W. Garner. She is survived by her mother, Violet Garner of Carlsbad; sons and daughters-in-law John and Brenda Cunningham and Dale Cunningham, all of Oregon, and Daniel Cunningham and Jocelyn Stenberg of Minneapolis; sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Alan Toyne of California; and four grandchildren.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, at Pacific Breeze Baptist Church.

Carmelo Coloma, 69
ESCONDIDO - Carmelo L. Coloma, 69, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007.
Born Aug. 7, 1937, in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he lived in Escondido for three years. He was a driver for a care center. He was a city councilman for 12 years in San Nicolas.
Mr. Coloma was preceded in death by his daughter. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Flaviana Coloma of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Melvina and Christopher Wood and Vicky Coloma and Ferdinand Rasay, all of Escondido; sons and daughters-in-law Manuel and Shirley Coloma, Larry and Minda Coloma, and Noel and Elena Coloma, all of San Nicolas, and Ruben and Malou Coloma of Escondido; brothers Hipolito Coloma of Murrieta, Amar Coloma of Pensacola, Fla., and Juan Coloma and Victor Coloma, both of San Nicolas; sisters Castora Cudal and Esmenia Mamuad, both of San Nicolas; and 18 grandchildren.

Morris Strohl, 87
SAN DIEGO - Morris Allen Strohl, 87, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007.
Born June 20, 1919, in Long Pine, Neb., he lived in San Diego for 50 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Minutemen's Club and the Retired Officers Association.
Mr. Strohl was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Jean C. Strohl, in 2005.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Rita Lubeshkoff of Lakewood, Ohio; nephews Ted Lubeshkoff of Arcadia and Charles Lubeshkoff of Spotsylvania, Va.; and nieces Karen Engelkenjohn of St. Louis and Nancy Lubeshkoff of Lincoln.
Inurnment took place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.

Richard Zajic, 84
LEESBURG, Va. - Richard C. Zajic, 84, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007.
Born Oct. 13, 1922, in Astoria, Long Island, N.Y., he lived in Leesburg for two years. He lived in Oceanside previously. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II.
He studied engineering at Pratt Institute in New York City, industrial engineering at the Industrial Management Institute in Philadelphia and managerial education at USC. He was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Mr. Zajic is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha H. Zajic of Leesburg; sons and daughters-in-law Gregg and Diana Zajic of Chelsea, Mich., and Keith and Cher Zajic of Calabasas; daughters and sons-in-law Gail and Pat Nolan of Leesburg, and Marty and Dan DeSollar of Yorba Linda; brother and sister-in-law Christopher and Helen Zajic of Santa Barbara; and nine grandchildren.
Private interment at Arlington National Cemetery is planned.
Lloyd East, 95
HEMET - Lloyd Len East, 95, died of natural causes Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007.
Born Dec. 23, 1911, in Los Angeles, he lived in Hemet for 16 years and Fallbrook for 24 years. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions. He was a design engineer in the aircraft industry. He raised chickens and had avocado groves and was a general contractor in Fallbrook.
He built several homes and contracted to build several church buildings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including the buildings in Fallbrook, Westminster, Vista and Indio.
He lived in Argentina for three years and built three Mormon Chapels and toured much of South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Chile.
He enjoyed fishing and RV camping.
Mr. East was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Helen Foster East.
He is survived by his sons, Gerald, Ronald and Richard East; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers; and one sister.
Interment was at Nuevo Memory Gardens in Ramona.
Deoris Castle, 83
SUN CITY -- Deoris Castle, 83, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at her home.
Born Aug. 29, 1923, in Champaign, Ill., she lived in Sun City for 20 years.
Mrs. Castle was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Castle, in 1997. She is survived by her son, Robert Castle of Woodland Hills; and daughter, Jean Russell of Woodland Hills.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. Private burial at Riverside National Cemetery is planned.

SUN CITY -- Doris Wootton, 85, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at her home.
Born Sept. 13, 1921, in Bisbee, Ariz., she lived in Sun City since 1989. She was a registered nurse for more than 30 years and retired in 1981 from Pioneer Hospital in Lakewood.
Mrs. Wootton was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Wootton; son, Michael Wootton; and daughter, Jill Eileen Blevins. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Dana and Jerry Davidson of Sun City and Christie and Jerry Green of San Bernardino; brother-in-law, James Wootton of Oceanside; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at First Lutheran Church, 600 W. Summer Ave. in Lake Elsinore.

SUN CITY -- Ronald Brandt Hoffman, 71, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at his home.
Born Nov. 18, 1935, in Manville, Ohio, he lived in Sun City for seven years.
Mr. Hoffman is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sherry Hoffman; sons Jim Hoffman, Jon Hoffman, Jeff Hoffman and Jason Hoffman; daughter-in-law, Traci; brother, Donald Hoffman of Connecticut; and one grandson.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Evans-Brown Mortuary in Sun City.

Robert Alan 'Bob' Quick
Bob, 77, passed away on Feb. 16, 2007.
Born in Chicago, Bob graduated from Ohio State in 1952 with a degree in industrial engineering. While at Ohio State, Bob met and fell in love with Ainslie Smith. They married in 1952 and had three children. Bob was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. In 1970, Bob and his family moved to San Diego from Minnesota, settling in Clairemont and eventually Olivenhain. After "retiring" in 1992, Bob dabbled in real estate sales. Bob was a member of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers (AIIE) and the San Diego Council of Engineers. Bob became a Mason in 1955. In 1974, Bob joined the Al Bahr Shrine and became a member of the Drum & Bugle Corps. In 1994, Bob became one of the first volunteer patrol officers for the County Sheriff's Department in Encinitas, Calif. If Bob were asked how things were going in heaven, Bob would say, "Round and round."
Bob is survived by Ainslie, his wife of 54 years; children Bob Jr., Jack and Vikki; and five wonderful granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held at the Lake San Marcos Resort, Bridge Room, today, Feb. 24, 2007, at 2 p.m.
Richard Salupo
Richard Salupo passed away on February 8, 2007, in San Marcos, California. He was born on January 12, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio. Richard lived in San Diego for 26 years. Prior to moving to San Diego, he was part owner of LaSalle Furniture, a family owned business since 1948 in Cleveland with his cousins, Wayne and Gary Salupo, which later was called Casa LaSalle and owned by Raymond Salupo.
Richard moved to San Diego after taking a vacation here, where he experienced the beauty and peacefulness of La Jolla. He so enjoyed the ocean and nature here.
Richard's career in furniture was over a span of 40 years and included sales, marketing, decorating and management. He worked for several furniture stores throughout San Diego including Waterbed Emporium, Levitz, La Jolla Patio and Mattress, Soil Shield, Dinettes for Less and most recently for The Sofa Store in San Marcos for Jeff Eckler.
Richard enjoyed watching sports, comedian George Carlin, travel, gardening and entertaining his friends. Being of Sicilian descent, he enjoyed cooking and a "good" martini.
Richard will be missed by many people who had the opportunity to know him personally as well as professionally.
