Dean McKown, 41

SAN DIEGO - Dean Evan McKown, 41, died Monday, May 3, 2004, in Escondido.

Born Nov. 1, 1962, in Escondido, he lived in San Diego for 10 years. He graduated from San Pasqual High School in Escondido. He enjoyed progressive house-dance music and massage therapy.

Mr. McKown is survived by his parents, Judith and Roger McKown of Escondido; and brothers Dennis McKown of San Diego and Scott McKown of Vista.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at Grant Hill Park in San Diego.

Gloria Woods, 78

RAMONA - Gloria Woods, 78, died Monday, May 3, 2004, at her home.

Born Feb. 24, 1926, she lived in Ramona for six years. She enjoyed antiques and owned Casa Madera Antiques in Los Gatos. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Ramona.

Mrs. Woods was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Woods, in 1996. She is survived by her sons, Vernon Maggi and James Maggi, both of San Jose, Brett Woods of Magalia, Ron Woods of Roseville and James Woods Jr. of Los Gatos; daughters Linda Maggi of Placerville, Cheryle Ramirez of San Jose, Sandra Maggi of Ramona and Julie Woods of Long Beach; sisters Mary Martinez of Lancaster and Lillian Santos and Ann Colmenero, both of Fresno; and 19 grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today, May 7, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Ramona. Private interment at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine is planned.

Ernie Hommerding, 63

CHINO - Ernie Hommerding, 63, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.

Born Feb. 16, 1941, in Pearl Lake, Minn., he lived in Chino since 1991. He lived in San Marcos previously. He was a property manager for 13 years.

Mr. Hommerding is survived by his wife, Jeani Hommerding; sons Lorne Hommerding of Chino, Danny Steinbrugger of Joshua Tree, James Steinbrugger of Redlands and Micah Steinbrugger of Chino; daughters Lana Hommerding of Chino and April DeLaCruz of Wrightwood; mother Dorothy Hommerding of Hemet; brothers Jim Hommerding of Ojai, Bill Hommerding of Vista, Roy Hommerding Jr. of Clearwater, Fla., and Ronald Hommerding of Sauk Rapids, Minn.; and grandchildren Katie and Seth.

Wendy Cruse, 75

VISTA - Wendy Mary Cruse, 75, died Sunday, May 2, 2004, of lung cancer.

Born Feb. 20, 1929, in Nottingham, England, she lived in Vista for six months. She retired in 1995 as a children's writer. She wrote more than 100 stories and was published in the "Summer Weekly Reader," "Highlights for Children," "Jack & Jill" and others. She was a Girl Scout Brownie leader.

Mrs. Cruse is survived by her husband of 49 years, Roderick B. Cruse of Vista; sons and daughter-in-law Greg and Robin Cruse of San Clemente and Rich Cruse of Laguna Niguel; daughter Jill Cruse and partner Karen Deal of Oakland; and grandchildren Carli and Chloe.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona Del Mar. Private cremation is planned.

Born July 18, 1907, in Mississippi, she lived in Oceanside for 34 years. She was self-employed.

Mrs. Shephard was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Shephard, in 1982. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, David and Ruth Shephard of Woods Hole, Mass., and Frank and Susan Shephard of Falmouth, Mass.; daughters and sons-in-law Sandra and James. W. Stanton of San Diego and Susan and John Rozsa of Sacramento; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Born Sept. 10, 1920, in Evanston, Ill., she lived in Escondido for five years. She was a secretary at Norton Air Force Base for 22 years. She was a member of the Escondido Grandmother's Club. She played cards at The Springs Retirement Home in Escondido.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her first husband, Ira Rudolph, in 1959; and second husband Bill Brown in 1990. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Ron Ketcham of San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law Edward and Nancy Rudolph of Minden, Nev.; grandchildren David, James, Kathy and Bill; and eight great-grandchildren.

Born April 10, 1926, in Los Angeles, she lived in Rancho Bernardo for six years. She was a bookkeeper. She attended The Church of Christ Science in Long Beach.

Mrs. Heminger is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Karen Heminger of Oceanside.

Mr. Jonas is survived by his wife of 24 years, Marie Jonas of Oceanside; son Christopher Jonas of Oceanside; daughter Catherine Jonas of Oceanside; and sister and brother-in-law Carol and Mark Schultz of Lexington, Ky.

ENCINITAS - Connie "Tillie" Toffol, 81, died Thursday, April 29, 2004, of cardiac arrest.

She was born June 6, 1922, in Italy. She was a sales clerk and a member of the Encinitas Senior Citizens Club.

Mrs. Toffol is survived by her husband, Gilbert Victor Toffol of Encinitas; son Gil Toffol; daughters Patti Miral, Linda Navurskis and Cristina Sheehan; sisters Rose Neimerk and Yolanda DeFano; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6, at St. John's Church with Monsignor Timothy Harnett officiating. Interment followed at El Camino Memorial Park.

ESCONDIDO - Louis Bernard Subka, 96, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Life Care of Escondido.

Born April 28, 1908, in Chicago, he lived in Escondido for 32 years. He retired as a processing clerk for Santa Fe Railroad.

Mr. Subka was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Subka, in 1992; daughter Pam Subka; and son James Subka. He is survived by his grandchildren John Subka of San Diego and Jacqueline Subka of Newbury Park.

LA JOLLA - Anna M. Bataller, 80, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Madonna Hills Guest Home in Carlsbad of Alzheimer's disease.

Born Dec. 18, 1923, in New York City, she lived in La Jolla for 25 years. She retired in 1988 from the University of California, San Diego.

She was a member of the Poway Lion's Club Women's Auxiliary and the Braves and Squaw's Square Dance Club in Poway.

Ms. Bataller was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Bataller, in 1973.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Lucy Bataller of Carlsbad; daughter and son-in-law Bonita and Neil Trevett of Yulee, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law Caesar and Rosemary Diaz of Levittown, N.Y.; and grandchildren Travis, Andre and David.

Born Nov. 2, 1928, in Birmingham, Ala., he lived in the Oceanside and Carlsbad area for 55 years. He retired as an accountant.

Mr. Moore is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judy Moore of Carlsbad; son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Peggy Moore of Carlsbad; daughters and sons-in-law Tracy and Randy Lockhart of Temecula and Lisa and Ron Colburn of Visalia; brother Joe Moore of Florida; sister Doris McCay of Birmingham; and seven grandchildren.

Elroy Wiehl, 87

RANCHO BERNARDO - Elroy F. Wiehl, 87, died Sunday, May 2, 2004, at Pomerado Hospital of prostate cancer.

Born June 21, 1916, in Whitebluffs, Wash., he lived in Rancho Bernardo for more than 30 years.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 30 years as a military attorney, and was certified to present cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Japan.

He retired as the city attorney of Escondido. He served on the Escondido Federal Credit Union Board of Directors for more than 25 years. He received his law degree from the University of Washington.

Mr. Wiehl is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Wiehl of Rancho Bernardo; son William Wiehl of Carlsbad; and sister Ida May Griffin of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho.

Helen Montague, 88

OCEANSIDE - Helen Crowley Montague, 88, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, of natural causes.

Born April 5, 1916, in New York City, she lived in Oceanside for 49 years. She retired in 1975 as a clerk for the Oceanside Municipal Court.

She worked in civil service at Camp Pendleton. She was a secretary at the Army Navy Academy in Carlsbad. She was a member of St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church in Oceanside since 1955, where she was a CCD teacher.

She was a Girl Scout Leader for 25 years. She was a member of the Stella Maris No. 183, Young Ladies' Institute since 1959, and was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Mrs. Montague was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Montague, on June 20, 1988; and parents Richard and Helen Crowley in 1969.

She is survived by her daughters, Iris Hofreiter and Bonnie Montague, both of Oceanside; and grandchildren Thomas, Courtney and Patrick Hofreiter.

Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 9, at Oceanside Mortuary, 602 S. Coast Highway in Oceanside.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, May 10, at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church, 609 Pier View Way in Oceanside with the Rev. Patrick Mulcahy officiating.

Mrs. Gallo was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Francis Gallo, in 1970. She is survived by her son, Anthony Irvin Gallo of Arizona; daughters and son-in-law Donna Gallo Miss of Oceanside and Jolene Gallo Vandolah and Daniel of Santa Fe, N.M.; and grandchildren Megan, Nicholas, Joseph and Justin.

SAN DIEGO - Stanley James Hutchinson, 55, died Sunday, May 2, 2004, of injuries he received in a motorcycle accident.

He was born Oct. 16, 1948. He was president of MedImpact Healthcare Systems Inc. He was a pharmacists and co-owned and operated Hutchinson's Drug Store in Flint, Mich.

Mr. Hutchinson was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Leon Hutchinson. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Patricia Hutchinson; mother Helen Hutchinson; and brother David Hutchinson.

Viewing is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. today, May 7, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, 17010 Pomerado Road in San Diego.

ESCONDIDO - Arlene Marie Lalasz, 87, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born July 13, 1916, she lived in Escondido for 29 years and was a homemaker for 61 years. She was a jewelry department manager at Gimbels in Milwaukee for 15 years.

Mrs. Lalasz was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Lalasz, in 1995. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law William and Martita Lalasz of La Mesa; and grandchildren Sabrina and Elliott.

A graveside service was held Monday, May 3, at Oak Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Richard Huls officiating.

Robert Lynch Sr., 71

OCEANSIDE - Robert "Bob" L. Lynch Sr., 71, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at his home.

Born July 11, 1932, in St. Albans, Vt., he lived in Oceanside for 42 years. He retired Nov. 30, 1970, as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in Korea and Vietnam. He enjoyed freshwater fishing and playing bingo with the Samoan communities in Oceanside and Vista.

Mr. Lynch is survived by his wife of 52 years, Zinaida "Anita" Lynch of Oceanside; sons and daughter-in-law Roy Edward Lynch of Littleton, Colo., and Robert L. and Diane Lynch of California City; daughter and son-in-law Sharon Ann and Jeff Simison of Sun City; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

John Tolbert Stewart

John died on May 1, 2004, in Escondido, California. He was born November 19, 1954, in Levelland, Texas. He attended Lincoln, Central, Grant and Escondido High School in Escondido. He joined the Army on his 17th birthday; he was in the 82nd Airborne and was honorably discharged. He worked in the coal mines in West Virginia, for 17 years. After the mines closed down he moved back to California and did various odd jobs throughout the county of San Diego.

John leaves behind a wife, Cheryl, of Escondido and her daughter, Courtney, and one granddaughter, Emma, who lives in Henton, West Virginia; a mother and father, Betsy and J.T. Stewart of Escondido; a grandmother in Atticia, Kansas; a younger sister, Brenda and her husband, Walter James, and their two daughters, Carrie and Maribeth James, both of Escondido; two brothers and their families, Lonnie and Hoa Stewart and their children, David, Sandy and Willie; and five grandchildren of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Alvin and Darla Stewart of Menifee, Calif.; their two children, Jeb Stewart and Dena Heart; and seven grandchildren; also his close companion, "Old Son" his faithful dog. He also leaves behind many close family and friends in Henton, West Virginia, and Escondido, California.

No funeral services are planned; John will be cremated and his ashes will be spread over the mountains of West Virginia, according to his wishes. A private family gathering will take place this week.

Jeanice Marie Roosevelt

Jeanice Marie Roosevelt, 57, of Vista, died April 29. She was a preschool teacher and was previously the director of Trinity College of Graduate Schools at San Luis Rey Mission.

Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer Harvey of Eureka; sons Ben Roosevelt, Tim Roosevelt and Peter Roosevelt, all of Vista; mother Eleanor Whipple of Vista; brother Larry Fowler of Northborough, Mass.; and two grandchildren.
