He served over 24 years in the military, and was part of the Marine Infantry in WWII, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam conflict. His legacy as a strong, fair and protective leader lives on in the hearts of all the men and women who served with him.
His medals include: Silver Star Medal, Purple Heart Metal w/ 3*, U.N. Service Medal, Korean Service Medals w/ 2*, National Defense Service Metals w/1*, Korean Presidential Unit Commendation, WW II Victory Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Legion of Merit w/³Valor,³ Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Metal, Naval Reserve Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medals.

They met at the RCA plant in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1953. It was love at first sight and throughout their marriage. He deeply loved his wife and family and was especially proud of his children and grandchildren.
His children include: Edward Roy Lukas of Encino, California, Liz Funkhauser of Littleton, Colorado, Vicki Naish of Descanso, California. Grandchildren are: Caleb Funkhauser, Dieter Funkhauser, Nikki Funkhauser, Ty Stafford, Travis Naish, Austin Naish, Zachary Lukas and Abigail Lukas.
