Dale Adams, 83

SUN CITY -- Dale Vern Adams, 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at his home.

Born Feb. 18, 1923, in Huntley, Minn., he lived in Sun City for six years. He was a self-employed truck driver for 45 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Body of Christ. He enjoyed collecting hats.

Mr. Adams was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Zella Adams. He is survived by his wife, Betty Adams of Sun City; sons and daughter-in-law Lee Adams of Kentucky, and Gary Adams and Linda Johnson, both of California; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 3 p.m. to the start of the funeral service at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. Interment will be at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Riverside National Cemetery.

Miller-Jones is handling arrangements.

Helen Josephson, 94

ENCINITAS - Helen Josephson, 94, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006.

She was born July 4, 1912, in Pennsylvania. She was a seamstress for a sportswear manufacturer.

Ms. Josephson is survived by her daughter, Diana Gabriel of New York; son Daniel Josephson of Encinitas; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

A gathering will take place today, Sept. 9, at Daniel Josephson's home at 148 Hillcrest Drive in Encinitas.

Inurnment at Cypress Hills Cemetery, 833 Jamaica Ave. in Brooklyn, N.Y., is planned.

Ruben Mora Sr., 76

ESCONDIDO - Ruben Jose Mora Sr., 76, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006.

Born Feb. 18, 1930, in San Pedro, he lived in Escondido for 40 years. He enjoyed singing traditional Mexican folklore, sports and his grandchildren.

Mr. Mora is survived by his wife of 54 years, Antonia Hernandez Mora of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Martha Serrato and Lorie and Roland Garza, all of Escondido, and Erendira and Sal Castaneda of West Covina; sons and daughters-in-law Ruben and Alejandra Mora and Victor and Monica Mora, all of Escondido; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Church of the Resurrection, 1445 Conway Drive in Escondido. Interment at Oak Hill Memorial Park is planned.

Trudy West, 84

FALLBROOK - Trudy M. Edeltraud West, 84, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006.

Born Oct. 21, 1921, in Bavaria, Germany, she lived in Fallbrook for three years. She was a homemaker and enjoyed history, knitting, crocheting and needlework.

She played the accordion, entertaining family with German polkas.

Mrs. West was preceded in death by her husband, David M. West. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Boultinghouse; sister Siglinde Hieber of Wemding, Germany; and grandsons Keith and Kyle Patterson of Fallbrook.

A private graveside service at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is planned.

DeWitt Warren, 80

VISTA - DeWitt C. Warren, 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006.

Born July 28, 1926, in Glendive, Mont., he lived in Vista since 1986. He graduated from the University of Montana at Missoula in 1948. He was a CPA in San Francisco from 1949 to 1981. He was a member of Shadowridge Country Club for 20 years.

Mr. Warren is survived by his wife, Helen Warren; and daughters Barbara and Patricia.

No services are planned.

The family suggests donations to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Andrew Hubbard Jr., 90

LAKE SAN MARCOS - Andrew Simpson Hubbard Jr., 90, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.

Born Sept. 18, 1915, in Carbondale, Pa., he lived in Lake San Marcos for two years. He lived in Hidden Meadows in Escondido for 18 years previously. He was in sales with the New England High Carbon Wire Co. for 16 years. He served in the U.S. Army as a captain during World War II. He was a member of the Masons, the Evangelical Congregational Church in Grafton, Mass. He was a member of the Hidden Meadows Golf Club and was a volunteer for Elizabeth Hospice.

Mr. Hubbard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hope Hubbard of Lake San Marcos; sons and daughters-in-law Andrew S. III and Richelle Hubbard of Wenatchee, Wash., and Frank K. and Linda Hubbard of Avon, Ind.; daughter Jane K. Hubbard of Mammoth Lake; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Private family service and interment were held.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Betty Johnson, 81

CASTLE ROCK - Betty L. Johnson, 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colo.

She was born March 24, 1925, in Logan, Utah. She was a waitress at Vista#'s Allen's Alley and Chef's Hut. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Castle Rock Ward. She enjoyed playing golf.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her children and their spouses, John and Karen Herr of Larkspur, Susan and David Sellens of California, and Colleen Herr of California; sisters Colleen Rockwell of California, and Barbara Walker of Arizona; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family suggest in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the Valley House, Elderly Assisted Living, 255 S. Valley Drive, Castle Rock, CO, 80104.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Olinger Andrews Caldwell Gibson Funeral Home in Castle Rock, Colo.

Freda Floyd, 69

ESCONDIDO- Freda M. Floyd (Morgan), 69, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at her home.

Born Jan. 28, 1937, she was an avid traveler and passed on her love of nature to her children.

Mrs. Floyd is survived by her children, Terry L. Sanders and Tammy D. Pauley; and grandson Brandon P. Benetti.

Memorial services were held Sept. 2, at the North County Baptist Church in Escondido. A reception followed at Cocina Del Charro in Escondido.

Ginger Groutage, 36

FALLBROOK - Ginger Hedeen Groutage, 36, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, of injuries she received in an automobile accident in Minnesota, while on vacation.

She was born October 31, 1969.

Mrs. Groutage is survived by her husband, Aaron; daughters Caitlyn and Erin; son Christian; mother Susan Hedeen; father John Hedeen; sister Vicki Westerling; and stepmother Donna Hedeen.

Donations may be sent to the Fallbrook High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) scholarship fund in her name.

David Freeze, 52

ENCINITAS - David Wayne Freeze, 52, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006.

Born March 10, 1954, in San Diego, he lived in Encinitas for four years. He retired in 2001 from SDG&E. He served in the U.S. Army in Alaska.

Mr. Freeze was preceded in death by his wife, Verlee Freeze, in 1994. He is survived by his son, Christopher Michael Freeze of Carlsbad; stepson Justin Virabalin of Houston; brothers Donald Freeze and Larry Freeze, both of San Diego; sisters Joanne Himstreet of San Diego and Sharon Barron of Vista.

A memorial service will be held today, Sept. 9, at Seaside Presbyterian Church in Encinitas with the Rev. Steve Barke officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Leland Lewis Brown, 81

RAMONA - Leland Lewis Brown, 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.

Born March 26, 1925, in Salt Lake City, he lived in Ramona for 26 years. He served in the Marin County Sheriff's Department in Navato as a Lt. Chief of Civil Division in the Court Division and retired in 1980. He served in the U.S. Navy for 12 years and the Coast Guard for eight years. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ramona. He was active at San Vicente Country Estates, where he was Marshall of the golf course and played Santa. He helped in the renovation of the Weiss House at Country Estates.

Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his first wife of 48 years, Mitzie Brown, in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Wooten of Ramona; brother James L. Brown of Salt Lake City; and sister Oretta L. Cortland of Vacaville.

Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to the start of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ramona. Interment will follow at Nuevo Memory Gardens in Ramona.

Amber Lloyd, 29

FALLBROOK - Amber Marie Lloyd, 29, died of Ewing's sarcoma cancer Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at City of Hope in Duarte.

Born March 21, 1977, in Fallbrook, she lived there all her life. She received a bachelor's degree in communications from San Diego State University and a master's degree in education from National University. She was a wardrobe designer, a cancer diet educator and a writer.

Ms. Lloyd was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Lloyd, in 2006. She is survived by her husband, Raul Montes of Los Angeles; father Charles Lloyd of Fallbrook; brother Garrett Lloyd of Fallbrook; and sister-in-law Amber Leigh Lloyd of Fallbrook.

A private memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 10, in Carlsbad. Her cremains will be scattered.

Amy Diorio, 81 years, Menifee, Calif.

Amy Diorio, devoted wife of Carmine Diorio for 40 years, loving mother of five children, 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and surrogate mother and best friend to many, passed away on September 5, 2006.

Born in Orange, N.J., Amy worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey, as a surgical R.N. She met the love of her life, Carmine D. Diorio, M.D., over surgical masks in the operating room. Amy retired from nursing to raise her family in Franklin Lakes, N.J. The family moved to Riverside, Calif., after Dr. Diorio accepted a position at March Air Force Hospital.

Amy devoted her life to her family and her faith and was a parishioner at St. Vincent Ferrer, Sun City, Calif., and Our Lady of Fatima, San Clemente, Calif.

Amy volunteered her time to the Bargain Box Thrift Store in Temecula and to the Right-To-Life League.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Anne Manning (Kevin), Mary Elizabeth Fleming, Mary Margaret Hanson (Richard), and Mary Therese Hays (Terry) and son Joseph Diorio (Susan). Amy had 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation and rosary will be at Evans-Brown Mortuary, Sun City on Sunday, Sept. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, Sun City on Monday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Birth Choice of Temecula, 27488 Enterprise Circle West, Suite No. 4, Temecula, CA 92590.

Ted R. Tharp

Longtime Escondido resident Lt. Commander Ted R. Tharp, 89, went home to be with the Lord on August 28. 2006, after suffering a stroke. Ted passed away peacefully being surrounded by his five children. Born October 8, 1916, in Hutchinson, Kansas, Ted was one of nine children and is survived by four of his siblings. Ted lived in Escondido with his wife, Ann, for 26 years. Following the death of his wife in 2001, Ted moved to La Mesa, Calif., to be cared for by his son, Ralph.

Ted served in the United States Navy for 24 years, retiring in 1960 at the rank of Lt. Commander. Ted served in the USN submarine corps during WWII and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. After retiring from the Navy he worked for the State of California Workers Compensation Insurance Fund for 17 years. Ted retired in 1979 to concentrate on his love of golf. He became a member of the Escondido County Club and their "Hole in One Club" having made five over the course of his golfing years. During his retirement he also served with his wife, Ann, in the CARES ministry of Resurrection Catholic Church in Escondido.

Ted is survived by his five children and their spouses, Ralph and Sharon Tharp of El Cajon, Calif., Cheryl and Dave Doria of Kansas City, Mo., Midge and David Knox of Orange, Calif., Faye Tharp of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jeanne and Craig Taylor of Thornton, Colo. Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Ann, of 53 years and their eldest daughter, Paula Tharp of Escondido, Calif. Ted also leaves behind his greatest treasure and joy which are his 14 grandchildren, Joanna, Raymond, Michael, Ryan, Anna, Emily, Stacie, Lindsay, Adam, Courtney, Charis, Mark, Jacob and Bryce. "We Love You Papa!"

Inurnment will be at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. A private ceremony is planned.

Lillian Walker

Lillian C. Walker, age 95, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2006, at her home in Annapolis, Maryland, of natural causes.

Lillian was born August 30, 1911, in Melrose, Massachusetts, to Morris and Mary Fitzgerald. She lived and worked in Massachusetts until 1942 when she joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps as a baker until her honorable discharge in 1943. She is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Sergeant Major Joseph A. Walker USMC.

Lillian and Joe moved to Oceanside, California, in 1964, where she remained until 2001. Lillian was active in the Oceanside Elks, Emblem Club #177 and the Poinsettia Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She lived with her son in Annapolis, Maryland, for the past five years due to failing health.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Pamela Walker; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Annapolis on Saturday, September 30. She will be interred alongside her beloved husband at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside, California. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2006, at 1 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Crippled Children Fund or Alzheimer's Research charities.

Doris Mae Koger Honack

March 10, 1920 - September 1, 2006

Doris Honack, 86, of San Diego went home to the Lord one day after our 56th wedding anniversary. She was born in Arkansas City, Kansas, and later moved to Independence, Missouri. She worked as a ladies fashion buyer for the Jones Department Store. She met her husband there, married in 1950 and moved to San Diego in 1951. Doris lived a very active life. She loved skiing and was an excellent golfer. She belonged to the Needler's Quilting Group with dear friends from Tierrasanta. Doris and Henry loved to travel taking 17 cruises covering the world. They saw the USA in their motor home and enjoyed outings as members of the Shriner's and Escondido Elk's RV clubs.

Survivors include Henry Honack, husband; Gene Brokaw and Nancy Brokaw, son and daughter-in-law of Escondido; stepson Michael Henry Honack; sister Dorothy Jones of Blue Springs, Mo.; Goldie Childs Stewart, aunt of Arkansas City, Kansas; grandsons Jerry Brokaw and Andrew Nelson; and three great-grandchildren.

Interment at Fort Rosecrans, memorial service is being planned.

The family suggests donations may be made to Al Bahr Shrine Transportation Fund, or to one's favorite charity.

Lyle Virgin, 84

ESCONDIDO - Lyle Wayne Virgin, 84, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006.

Born Jan. 2, 1922, in Idaho, he lived in San Diego County for 58 years. He was a carpenter for 60 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Carpenter's Union and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed woodworking.

Mr. Virgin was preceded in death by his siblings, Merle Virgin, Leola Wolters and Valaire Nelson.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Mona Lee, Cheryl Lynette and Phillip Marriott, Karen Elaine and Frank Grant, Harold Wayne and Beverly Virgin, Julie Ann and Rakesh Kumar, Shauna Jean and Tom Andrews, Kim Allen, Dana Kent and Celesta Virgin, Blair Steven and Neta Virgin, Charles Edward and Leslie Elliott Virgin, and Glen Jay and fiancee Heidi Wilbur; siblings Shirley Peppers, Cleon Virgin, Paul Virgin, Bill Scott, Milo Bishop and Garn Bishop; 36 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 9, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1917 E. Washington Ave. in Escondido.

Private interment at Oak Hill Memorial Park is planned.

The family suggests donations to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund, 1917 E. Washington Ave., Escondido, CA 92027.
