Ruth Volz, 74
VISTA - Ruth Adeline Volz, 74, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, on Oceanside.
Born March 4, 1929, in Currie, N.D., she lived in Vista for 34 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Vista.
She served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. She was a member of the WAVES of North County and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
Mrs. Volz is survived by her husband, Edward Volz of Vista; daughters Deborah Schuster of Palmdale, Cynthia Tyler of Vista and Rebecca Jaburg of Escondido; brother Art Jenson of Pasco, Wash.; sisters Margaret Tastad of Fertile, Minn., and Esther Weigel of River Falls, Wis.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Faith Lutheran Church in Vista with the Rev. Dr. B.D. Droegemueller officiating.
Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

SAN MARCOS - Joan Daphne Steinbruegge, 82, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003.
Born Feb. 1, 1921, in Bedford, England, she lived in San Marcos and Vista for 17 years. She was a retired clerk for Singer. She served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mrs. Steinbruegge was preceded in death by her husband, William Steinbruegge, in 2003; and sister Eileen Price in 1983.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Tom Walter of San Marcos; sister Doreen Bamback of San Diego; grandchildren Scott, Eric and Corinna; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at San Marcos Cemetery with the Rev. Sam Brumit officiating.

Kent Poorman, 48
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Kent Damian Poorman, 48, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003.
Born Dec. 16, 1954, on Camp Pendleton, in Oceanside, he lived in Independence for nine years. He was an Autopats salesman. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1974 to 1980.
He graduated from Oceanside School in 1974. He was in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed fishing.
Mr. Poorman is survived by his wife, Rita Napier-Poorman of Springs, Mo.; parents Charles and Rita Poorman of Oceanside; stepson James Moran; daughter Chelsea Sky Poorman of Blue Springs, Mo.; brothers Michael Poorman of Oceanside, Kelan Poorman of Fallbrook and Brett Poorman of San Marcos; and sisters Victoria Mann of Nevado, Patricia Mispagel of Hemet, Corinne Mann of Springfield, Ore., Jill Martinez of Murrieta and Kimberly Bradley of Oceanside.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Mission San Luis Rey Parish Chapel, 4070 Mission Ave., in Oceanside with the Rev. Michel Gagnon officiating.
Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery with the Rev. Gagnon officiating.

Adam Shawkey, 89
ESCONDIDO - Adam D. Shawkey, 89, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at his home.
Born Dec. 21, 1913, in Butler, Pa., he lived in Escondido for three years. He retired in 1973 as a director of contract administration for General Dynamics.
He was a 32 Degree Mason and a member of the Rancho Bernardo Anglers Club. He was a Boy Scout leader for the Spring Valley California Boy Scouts for four years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed golf, fishing and traveling.
Mr. Shawkey is survived by his wife of 66 years, Louise S. Shawkey of Escondido; son Richard Shawkey of Oklahoma; daughter and son-in-law Ann and Ben Wier of Rancho Bernardo; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
No services will be held at the request of the deceased. A private cremation is planned.

SANA DIEGO - Olive Frances Luther, 93, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at a local convalescent home.
Born Sept. 10, 1910, in Fall River, Mass., she lived in San Diego County for 18 years. She retired after 45 years as a secretary for the state of Rhode Island.
Mrs. Luther was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Luther, on Feb. 27, 1995.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Jack Wolf of Rancho Penasquitos; and grandchildren Sheri Carroll and Sara Wolf.
Burial will take place at Highland Memorial Park in Johnston, R.I.

MURRIETA - Odelia "Dee" Walbridge, 54, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003.
Born June 6, 1949, in Baltimore, Md., she lived in Murrieta for seven years. She was an actress for 13 years working for Stunts Ability. She graduated from Palomar College in San Marcos.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook, the Screen Actors Guild and the Gemology Association. She was an artist and horseback rider.
Ms. Walbridge is survived by her husband of 5 1/2 years, Alan Walbridge of Murrieta; daughters and son-in-law Shannon and Robert DeWyn and Kelly Termine, all of Fallbrook; brother and sister-in-law Vince and Jean Alimo of Baltimore, Md.; and grandson Ethan DeWyn of Fallbrook.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 9, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary.

ESCONDIDO - Elenore Valentine, 95, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003.
Born Dec. 3, 1908, in Berkeley, she lived in Escondido for 31 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Light and Life Church in Escondido.
She worked for Union Oil Co. during World War II. She rode a three-wheel bicycle until she was 93 years old.
Mrs. Valentine was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Alfred Valentine, in August 1999; and parents Daisy and Albert Wright.
She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Sidney and Lou Valentine of Poway and Roy Valentine of Roswell, N.M.; brother Herb Wright of Salt Lake City; grandchildren Chris, Tom, Susan, Val, Nicky and Ron; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Light and Life Church in Escondido. Interment will be at Chapple of Chimes in Oakland.

Robert Marlin Sr., 81
ENCINITAS - Robert W. Marlin Sr., 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at his home of cardiac arrest.
Born March 15, 1922, in Hebron, Ind., he lived in Encinitas for 33 1/2 years. He retired on March 15, 1987 from UCSD Medical Center as an engineer.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the San Diego County Orchid Society and the Free and Accepted Mason East San Diego Lodge No. 561.
Mr. Marlin is survived by is wife of 58 years, Ardell O. "Lucky" Marlin of Encinitas; son and daughter-in-law Robert W. Jr. and Vera Marlin of Cottage Grove, Okla.; daughter Sandra Anne Marlin of Prescott, Ariz.; and brother Joseph C. Marlin of Prescott.
A memorial service will be held on March 15, 2004 at Rancho Ardello.

FALLBROOK - Lester John Selck, 83, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, in Sunday.
Born Feb. 27, 1920, he was raised in Huntington Park and lived in Fallbrook for more than 40 years. He worked in swimming pools and agriculture.
He built his home and raised avocado and limes in his grove. He enjoyed animals.
Mr. Selck was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; and sister Ruth.
He is survived by his companion, Hildegard Smith of Fallbrook stepson Kenneth of Watsonville; and nephews Tom Willis of Oxnard, Mike Willis of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Bill Willis of Flower Mound, Texas.

ESCONDIDO - Sandy Doerfel, 54, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Life Care Center of Escondido of breast cancer.
Born Feb. 1, 1949, in Philadelphia, she lived in Escondido for 23 years. She was an adjunct math professor at Palomar College since 1981. She received a master's degree in math education from Penn State. She was a member of New Life Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed trains.
Ms. Doerfel was preceded in death by her father, Harold Doerfel, in 1984.
She is survived by her mother, Helen Doerfel of Hammonton, N.J.; brother and sister-in-law Bill and Marilyn Doerfel of Norman, Okla.; and sisters and brothers-in-law Barb and Joe Lindenmuth and Martha and Greg Hackenberger, all of Roslyn, Pa., and Deb Doerfel of Glenside, Pa.

CARLSBAD - Delores Anne McDaniel, 52, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, of a brain tumor.
Born Feb. 16, 1951, in Salinas, she lived in Carlsbad for 17 years. She was a self-employed tax preparer.
She attended St. Bedes Parochial School in La Canada and St. Andrews High School in Pasadena, graduating in 1969.
He was a member of New Venture Christian Fellowship She enjoyed sewing, gardening and flower arrangements.
Mrs. McDaniel was preceded in death by her father, Frank E. Latasa in 1981; and brother Nicholas J. Latasa in 2002.
She is survived by her husband of 15 years, Bob McDaniel of Carlsbad; mother Cherie J. Latasa Meola of Oceanside; son Justin A. Huebscher of Oceanside; daughter Mary Sierra McDaniel of Point Loma; brothers and sisters-in-law Richard and Merrie Latasa , Frank Latasa and Fred and Teri Latasa, all of Oceanside; and sisters Alizabeth Latasa of Oceanside, Francine Hannon of Bend, Ore., Theresa Latasa of Columbus, N.M., and Paula Kinzer of Bend, Ore.

Mr. Corso is survived by his wife, Pearle Corso of San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law Brian and Jeanette Corso of Oceanside; stepson and daughter-in-law Wayne and Nicole Nicholson of Oceanside; daughter and son-in-law Terri and Gregg Hiraoka of Hawaii; stepdaughter Kristy Mejia of Idaho; sisters Lee Dallas of Las Vegas and Lillian Patacchia of Culver City; grandchildren Romey, Kendra and Brayden; and three great-grandchildren.

Cameron is survived by his parents, Tina and Matt Ford of Ramona; brother Ryan Ford of Ramona; and sisters Cassie Ford and Courtney Ford, both of Ramona.

Richard C. "Dick" Ashman, died Sunday, December 7, 2003.
A Mass in celebration of his life will take place on Wednesday, December 10, at 11 a.m. at Saint Michael's Church, 15546 Pomerado Road in Poway.
Robert Marlin
Bob Marlin died peacefully at home on December 3, 2003, rocking in his favorite Arizona rocking chair, reading a western.
Bob's life was not ordinary. His was a life well-lived and well-loved, a life that will be missed dearly.
Bob worked for the UCSD Medical Center Facilities Engineering Staff from 1962 to 1987. He developed his passion for orchids after retirement.
Bob was a very active member of numerous orchid societies in the United States. He was past president of the San Diego County Orchid Society, a board member of the Southern California Species Society, and a board member of the Cymbidium Society of American.
There are sever orchids registered in Sanders as "Bob Marlin" in his honor.
He was a dedicated worker and member of several societies, promoting orchids and teaching their cultivation to others.
Bob was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, East San Diego, Lodge No 561.
Bob was a wonderful husband and father, an honest, gentle man and a friend to many. Bob leaves a wonderful wife, "Lucky" Marlin, his "sunshine," a loving son, Robert Jr., his daughter-in-law, Vera, and his loving daughter, Sandra Anne, and his brother, Joseph C. Marlin. He was a generous man and will be greatly missed by all. He leaves behind a universe of friends.

MENIFEE -- William Ray Conn, 84, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at his home.
Born July 23, 1919, in Hazlehurst, Mich., he lived in Menifee for 20 years. He was a woodworker and supervisor for Virco Manufacturing for 21 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1948. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1508 in Lake Elsinore and Pearl Harbor Survivors Post 27 in Hemet.
Mr. Conn is survived by his wife, Anna Conn of Menifee; sons Gary Conn of Elk Grove and Robert Conn of Hemet; daughter, Marjorie Sotero of Menifee; sisters Lorene Phillips of Cornith, Miss., and Anna Pell of Pascagoula, Miss.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. today, Dec. 9, at Miller-Jones Sun City Mortuary & Crematory Chapel. Burial will follow at 10:45 a.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, staging area No. 4.

SUN CITY -- Bernice Lucille Hall, 91, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Menifee Valley Medical Center.
Born Dec. 6, 1911, in Maynard, Iowa, she lived in Sun City for 16 years. She was a self-employed seamstress in the upholstery business for 36 years. She was a member of Eastern Star for more than 50 years. and the Daughters of the American Revolution for 35 years.
Mrs. Hall is survived by her companion, Gilbert Swint of Sun City; son, Charles Hall of Oklahoma City; sisters Virginia Bonshu of Barstow, Julie Chapin of Hemet and Betty Austin of Barstow; brother, Louis Smith of Torrance; and two grandchildren.
Private services are planned.
The cremains will be scattered off the coast of Orange County.

Born Nov. 1, 1934, in Decatur, Mich., she lived in Wildomar for 14 years. She was a manager for Pacific Bell for 26 years. She served in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE during World War II. She was a member of St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church.
Mrs. Durso is survived by her son, Michael Durso of Wildomar; sisters Florence Barrett of Dawagiac, Mich., and Bess Post of Waco, Texas; and grandson, Andrew Durso of Wildomar.
Visitation is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery.
