VISTA - Ivone Lauretta Zych, 82, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007.

Born Oct. 1, 1924, in Gary, Ind., she lived in North County for 25 years. She was a photographer for 30 years and operated a photography studio in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Mrs. Zych is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, J. Wayne and Cathleen Zych of Vista; sisters Bernice Skievaski of Seattle and Lois Gail Yoder of Boulder City, Nev.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Church of St. Thomas More in Oceanside.

Inurnment will follow at 2 p.m. at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery in Oceanside.

Virginia Adams, 48

ESCONDIDO - Virginia Marie Adams, 48, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007.

Born March 15, 1958, in Detroit, she lived in Escondido for nine years. She was employed at Tri-City Medical Center, where she was a critical care nurse.

Ms. Adams was preceded in death by her husband, David Adams, in 2004; parents Verne Sr. and Lilia McCall; and brother Verne McCall.

She is survived by her son,

Eric McCall of San Marcos; brothers and sisters-in-law Patrick W. and Janet McCall of Fenton, Mich., and Allan J and Josie McCall and William McCall, all of Hemet; sister Judith Schaefbauer of Yuma, Ariz.; boyfriend Steven Siaw of Escondido; and seven grandchildren.

Arthur Vandermolen, 77

SAN MARCOS - Arthur Vandermolen, 77, died of natural causes Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at his home.

Born Feb. 11, 1929, in Battle Creek, Mich., he lived in San Marcos for 10 years. He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church.

Mr. Vandermolen was preceded in death by his parents, Dorthea and John Vandermolen.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sally Vandermolen of San Marcos; stepsons Doug, Mitch, Rod and Vince; stepdaughter Cindy; and nine grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 26, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos.

Melva Fales, 71

VISTA - Melva Jean Fales, 71, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007.

Born Oct. 9, 1935, in Fort Smith, Ark., she lived in Vista for 35 years. She was an interpreter for the hearing impaired. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall.

Ms. Fales is survived by her son, Douglas Keith Fales of Iowa Hill; daughter Barbara Lee Lemans of Olney, Ill.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

No services are planned.

Hilde Sulzen, 75

OCEANSIDE - Hilde Sulzen, 75, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007.

Born July 8, 1931, in Marbach, Germany, she lived in Oceanside for 22 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Mission San Luis Rey Parish and the Las Madrenas group.

Mrs. Sulzen was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Sulzen, in 2006.

She is survived by her stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Robert and Kathy Sulzen of Ramona; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday, Jan. 27, at Mission San Luis Rey.

Inurnment at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery is planned.

Apolinar Vasquez, 82

SAN MARCOS - Apolinar "Polin" Vasquez, 82, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007.

Born July 22, 1924, in Jalisco, Mexico, he lived in San Marcos for 19 years. He was a factory worker.

He enjoyed cooking, watching soccer, and spending time with his family.

Mr. Vasquez is survived by his wife of 54 years, Maria Vasquez of San Marcos; sons and daughters-in-law Jose Luis and Alicia Vasquez, Ignacio and Teresa Vasquez, and Raul and Ana Vasquez, all of Yuma, Ariz., Jose de Jesus Vasquez of Vista, and Armando and Milagros Vasquez, Jaime Vasquez and Javier Vasquez, all of San Marcos; daughters Berth-Alicia Vasquez of Vista and Maria Yolanda Vasquez of San Marcos; brother Pedro Vasquez of Mexico; 26 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Viewing is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. and rosary recited at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, 225 S. Broadway in Escondido.

A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 102 E. 13th Ave. in Escondido.

TEMECULA - Susan Lynn Doleshal, 57, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at her home.

Born July 12, 1949, in Whittier, she lived in Temecula for eight years. She worked at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park for 35 years. She loved animals.

Mrs. Doleshal was preceded in death by her parents, Roland and Stella. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Gary Doleshal of Temecula; and sisters Darlene of Oceanside and Sherry of Idaho.

A memorial service is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park in Escondido. A private cremation is planned.

Honorata Mendoza, 96

VISTA - Honorata Mendoza, 96, died of pneumonia Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born April 4, 1910, in Cavite, Philippines, she lived in Vista for 18 years.

Mrs. Mendoza is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Narcisa and Roseller Martinez of Vista; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Viewing is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Eternal Hills Mortuary.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Eternal Hills Mortuary with the Rev. Lou Bitty officiating. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

SAN MARCOS - Virginia Thomas, 101, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born Jan. 11, 1906, in Waldo, Kan., she lived in San Diego County since 1976. She was an elementary schoolteacher in Los Angeles for 15 years. She was a seamstress and a member of Meadowlark Community Church in San Marcos.

Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, James Dayton Thomas, in 1991.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Diane Thomas of Russell, Kan.; daughter Patricia Della Vecchia of San Diego; brother Delbert Cochran of Waldo, Kan.; sister Doris Trapp of Luray, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Meadowlark Community Church in San Marcos with the Rev. David Shaw officiating.

Private cremation and interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills are planned.

Robert Miller Jr., 62

ESCONDIDO - Robert "Bob" J. Miller Jr., 62, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Kaiser Hospital in San Diego.

Born March 19, 1944, in Augusta, Ga., he lived in Escondido for nine years. He was a retail sales worker at WalMart. He enjoyed trains, collecting beer steins and porcelain villages and cooking.

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of 24 years, Deborah Miller of Escondido; and stepson William Walden of Ohio.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at McLeod Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. David Plank officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Joseph Kuehlwein, 79

ESCONDIDO - Joseph John Kuehlwein, 79, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at his home.

Born April 25, 1927, in Odessa, Ukraine, he lived in San Diego County since 1986. He owned Kuehlwein Chevrolet Dealership for 24 years. He was a fighter pilot in the German Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and the Rotary Club in Wisconsin.

Mr. Kuehlwein is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helga Kuehlwein of Escondido; son John Kuehlwein of Green Bay, Wis.; daughters and son-in-law Cindy and Greg DeVito of Escondido and Heidi and Terry Baker of Thiensville, Wis.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, Jan 29, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel, with Larry Gronow officiating.

Private cremation and interment at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Escondido are planned.

SAN MARCOS - Carolyn Anne July, 67, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at San Diego Hospital.

Born Dec. 17, 1939, in Hannibal, Mo., she lived in San Marcos for 15 years. She was a vocational instructor for the Employment Development Dept. of the State of California for 21 years. She was a member of the Red Hat Society.

Mrs. July is survived by her husband of 35 years, Clifford L. July of San Marcos; sons Les Goodwin of Simi Valley and John Goodwin of Covina; stepson Chris July of Queen Creek, Ariz.; stepdaughter Margaret Fitzpatrick of Seattle; half brother Leonard C. Morgan of Omaha, Neb.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Viewing is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel.

William Beck, 71

VISTA - William Leroy Beck, 71, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007.

Born April 21, 1935, in Tucson, Ariz., he lived in Vista for four years. He was a barber for more than 50 years and the owner of the Hidden Barbershop in Vista.

Mr. Beck is survived by his father, Harold Beck; sons Casey Beck of Vista, Robert Beck of Simi Valley and Tom Beck of Mission Viejo; brother Douglas Beck; sisters Pam and Christine; and five grandchildren.

No services are planned.

William Gerhart, 76

CARSON CITY, Nev. - William E. Gerhart, 76, died of respiratory failure Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007.

Born July 10, 1930, in Hemet, he lived in Carson City for two years. He graduated from Escondido High School in 1948.

He worked in the aerospace industry for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Elks Club for more than 40 years. He was an avid golfer and won the San Diego Open in 1968.

Mr. Gerhart was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Gerhart, in 1983; and son Douglas Gerhart in 1976.

He is survived by his daughters, Cathryn L. Gerhart of Carson City and Karen L. Honer of Mayer, Ariz.; brothers Donald R. Gerhart of La Mesa, Jack Gerhart of Fort Worth, Texas; and Larry Johnson of San Diego; and grandson Christopher A. Henry of Carlsbad.

A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Escondido.

Gerald Martin, 75

MENIFEE -- Gerald "Jerry" Ross Martin, 75, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at his home in Cottonwood Canyon.

He was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Inglewood. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was known as a philosopher of life. He enjoyed boating and fishing.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marianne Martin; three children; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother Jim Martin.

Services were held under "the oaks" at his home Thursday, Jan. 25.

William Stewart, 85

MURRIETA -- William Hoye Stewart, 85, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at his home.

He was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Deleon, Texas.

Sgt. Andrew C. Steele

VISTA - Andrew C. Steele, 24, died of injuries he received in an automobile accident Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in Ruban, Italy, while he was on active duty in the U.S. Army.

Born June 8, 1982, in Anaheim, he lived in Vista for 18 years. He enlisted in the Army after high school and was a sergeant.

Sgt. Steele is survived by his mother, Cynthia Steele of Oceanside; father Anthony Steele of Los Angeles; brother Anthony Steele; stepsister Tanya Steele of Los Angeles; uncles and aunt Jimmie and Debbie Walker, Kenneth Walker and Robert Walker; aunts and uncles Elaine and Spencer Holman of Murrieta and Jennifer and Allen Smith of Oceanside; and grandparents Herman and Mary Walker of Oceanside.

Norman Flones

Norman Flones passed away January 23, 2007, of natural causes.

He was born and spent most of his life in Michigan before coming to Vista 17 years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; stepson Robert Bauer; stepdaughter Alice Bauer Flones; a brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Virginia Flones; son-in-law Arne Flones; and several nieces and nephews.

Norman worked for Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn, Mich., for 43 1/2 years but his passion in life was building with wood, including two cabins and three small boats. In retirement he turned his talents to hand crafting clocks. Friends and relatives are owners of a grandfather clock, a grandmother clock, many banjo clocks and others of a variety of designs all made specially for them.

Private cremation and inurnment are planned.

Robert 'Bobby' Van Brook

Robert "Bobby" Van Brook, 59, died January 9, 2007, in La Jolla, California.

Sailing the deep blue sea was the passion of Robert "Bobby" William Van Brook.

Born May 20, 1947, in New London, Connecticut, to Irene and Robert Van Brook, they moved to Cardiff when Bobby was four years old. He attended school in Encinitas, becoming an apprentice carpenter upon leaving San Dieguito High School. He went on to a lifelong career in the construction industry. He moved to Orchidland on the big island of Hawaii, where he lived and raised his family for 13 years before returning to Encinitas. An avid sailor, one of his most memorable accomplishments was sailing his boat down the Baja peninsula around Cabo San Lucas and up the Sea of Cortez.

Bobby never had an unkind work for anyone and was known and admired for his sharp witticisms and one-liners. Bobby had a rare and unique sense of humor and was the life of any party. He was loved by all and will be sorely missed. His Aloha spirit will live on.

Bobby is survived by his longtime love and best friend, Eva Engelsberger; his father, Robert Van Brook; daughters Kim Diel of Michigan, and Keely Van Brook of Hawaii; his son, Christopher Dennis of Hawaii; sisters Diane Doell and Priscilla Van Brook; grandchildren Seth, Kainoa, Nicole and Shaylynn; nieces Rana and Micahn; nephew Mark; and an entire family of very good friends.

Joyce Geddes Bulmer

Joyce Geddes Bulmer was born in Hazelton, Pa., on Sept. 2, 1923. Joyce lived in Germany, Ohio, Colorado, Florida and finally settled in California in 1962. Joyce has lived in Vista, Calif., since 1989.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Jack" Bulmer in 1995; and her brother, George Pauff, who passed away in 2006. Joyce is survived by two children, a daughter, Wendy Burns of Knights Ferry, Calif., and a son, Jan Costenbader of Paradise, Calif.; seven grandsons, Kevin and Landon Burns, Karl, Mark, Matthew, Andrew and Benjamin Costenbader; three stepsons, John Bulmer of Riverside, Calif., Richard Bulmer of Manteca, Calif., and Dennis Bulmer of Newbury Park, Calif.; and nine stepgrandchildren.

Joyce enjoyed life, laughter and good friends. The "Duchess" was loved by all because she loved all. Her spirit was larger than life and life will not be the same without her. Joyce was a friend of Bill W. since 1981.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at 10 a.m. at the Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel. Interment will follow at the Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Calif.

Jason Glenn Birmingham

Jason Glenn Birmingham was born February 8, 1975, in Oceanside, California, to Ken and Sandy Birmingham. He passed away January 23, 2007, in Oceanside. Jason lived in San Diego all his life, graduating from Carlsbad High School, in 1993.

Jason had a kind and sensitive heart and was always the first person to help anyone in need. He loved fishing, spending time with Alicia, his nephews, playing poker online or person to person, was a great cook, loved tinkering with his computers, (If it was a computer and there was something wrong with it he could figure it out and fix it.) video games, the Chargers, but loved his family most of all.

He was preceded in death by his Grandma B., in 2003; and his mom, Sandy, in 2007.

He is survived by his father, Ken; brother Kenny (Shawnee), nephews Tyler and Kaden; sister Kurissa Dewitt; niece Kaylee Dewitt, both of West Virgina; the love of his life, Alicia; numerous aunts and uncles and cousins in West Virgina, Texas, and California.

In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to help pay for funeral expenses.

Florence Jordan Cowen

Florence Jordan Cowen died at her Carlsbad, Calif., home in the presence of her loving family on January 23, 2007, at the age of 84.

Florence was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on February 18, 1922, to Charles A. Jordan and Hannah Jones. The family lived in Los Angeles and moved to Vista when Florence was 11. Florence and her brothers, James and Charles, enjoyed the outdoor life on the Vista avocado ranch. Florence met her loving husband, Paul, during World War II. Paul and Florence owned and operated the Melody Malt Shop in Carlsbad, the Pepper Tree Inn and subsequently Imperial Realty in South Oceanside.

Florence held a Cosmetology license, an Advanced Class Ham Radio license (WA6FWG), a Real Estate license, and an Aesthetician license.

Florence's passion was her dedication to her family and she is survived by her sons, Steven and his wife, Dianne, Michael, and Robert; three grandchildren, Brian, Cassity, and David; and one great-grandson, David.

Services will be held at North Coast Calvary Chapel, 7188 Avenida Encinas, Carlsbad, CA 92011 (Poinsettia exit on I-5, go west), on Saturday, January 27, 2007, at 11:30 a.m. with a reception to follow.
