Ernest Zeno
San Dieguito High School Icon
Ernest "Ernie" Zeno died peacefully on April 3, 2004, in Encinitas, California, after a lengthy illness.
Ernie was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, the fourth son of Italian immigrant parents who had been interred at Ellis Island during World War I.
Ernie attended Waltham High School, where he was recognized not only as an outstanding student but also as an all-star in swimming, track, gymnastics, the shot put and football.
Ernie's high school summer months were spent at Walden Pond, in Concord, Mass., where he served as a public lifeguard. Ernie attended Boston College during his freshman year on a football scholarship, but soon transferred to the University of Nevada on a more appealing scholarship to play for the "Wolf Packs."
Continuing to set records on the football field, Ernie was scouted by Arizona State College and picked up on a full football scholarship, where he starred for four years as a running back, linebacker and fullback for the Arizona "Sun Devils."
Ernie earned his teaching credential from San Diego State University and was signed on in 1956 as a U.S. and world history teacher, track coach and later as head football coach at San Dieguito High School.
His personal philosophy, which he made certain those around him never forgot, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going" also drove his coaching philosophy. Coach Zeno led the San Dieguito High School Mustangs to the CIF (Avocado League) playoffs three consecutive years.
Later, accused of being "too tough" by the administration, Ernie was relieved of his coaching assignment. He was quick to inform the administration that he was running a football team, not a ladies' "garden party." "Playing third stringers does not make a winning team" he was fond of saying. Always outspoken and unwavering liberal, Ernie was an advocate for the disadvantaged, making it his focus to assist young people, urging them towards a higher education and excellence.
A vociferous advocate for teacher's rights, Ernie served for many years as the chief negotiator with the Teachers' Labor Union and the school district. An equally demanding classroom history teacher, Ernie is remembered for his vast knowledge of world affairs, U.S. history and ancient history and his keen intellect.
Ernie traveled extensively in Western Europe, accruing more than two dozen trips abroad before he became too ill to travel.
In 1983, he and his family acquired a Fulbright Scholarship to Lea Bridge, Derbyshire, UK, where he coached at the Anthony Gell Comprehensive School in Wirkswirth, Derbyshire, UK. His son, Joel, also attended Anthony Gell, where his father was assigned. During that academic year, Ernie and his family resided in the original, three hundred year old home of Florence Nightingale.
Following his retirement from the San Dieguito Union High School District, Ernie made his home variously in Port Angeles, Wash., Boise, Idaho, and Las Vegas.
His four children, Joel Zeno of Venice, Calif., Thor Asgardson of Encinitas, Stephanie Zeno of Cardiff, and Gregory Zeno of Santee, as well as his former wife, Joan Zeno of Encinitas, four grandchildren and dozens of nieces and nephews in the Los Angeles and Boston areas, survive Ernie.
A celebration of Ernie's life will be held April 18 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at his daughter's home in Cardiff, Calif.
Jean Allen Wehren

Jean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Susan Wehren of Newport, Oregon; daughter Rixanne Wehren of Albion; daughter and son-in-law Jean P. Wehren and John Plumbley of Vista. Her four grandchildren are Sarah (Wehren ) Kooiker and husband Tom of Chicago; and Jeff Wehren of Eugene, Oregon, and Melinda and Matthew Wehren of Vista. Her extended family includes the Kesselheims and Hamiltons of Wyoming, and Wehrens of California.
While raising a family of three children, Jean was active in the Vista community. She loved people and was thoughtful and caring toward many. She was involved in PTA at several schools, Junior Women#'s Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Girls#, Inc., and the Whirlaways Social Club. Jean was an active member of the Christian Science Church since 1955.
Jean will be remembered for her loving interest toward her friends, the unselfish, generosity of her time for others, and her devotion to her beloved husband and family. She never complained but rather always acknowledged and appreciated whatever was good in life. She taught her children that love is most important in life.
Jean and her family enjoyed many years of camping and travel, journeying with her children and grandchildren all over the western states, and later traveling with Robert throughout the eastern states, Alaska, Canada, and Panama. She had a deep love of nature which she passed on to her children. She loved music and dancing, enjoyed gardening, and being outdoors. The home that she and Robert built together was their greatest joy. Both Jean and Robert were grateful for so many good, close friends that they had throughout the many years they lived in Vista. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Dr. Daniel Kershner
Dr. Daniel C. Kershner succumbed to his battle with lung cancer on March 21, 2004, at the age of 50. Dr. Kershner leaves his mother Maria, his father Donnelley, a brother Mark and a sister Renee. Dr. Kershner showed amazing and courageous determination in dealing with his disease. His positive attitude to overcome this disease and to survive, against the greatest of odds, was a testimony to the way he lived. He sought no sympathy and did not bemoan his situation. Dano, as he was known to many, was a generous, gentle and compassionate soul. He took great pride and pleasure in his dental practice to improve people#'s appearance and oral hygiene. He dedicated himself to the highest quality of care to all of his patients, friends and family. He strove to learn and improve all aspects of his skill, his profession and his practice.
Kersh, another boyhood nickname and one he used when he sold real estate (#"Ask for Kersh"), was a lifelong student and a student of life. He was passionate about his studies and committed to overachieving. After finally graduating from UCSF in 1993 with a DDS, Dan sought opportunity back in Encinitas where his roots were and where he dreamed of setting up a high tech and modern dental practice. Years of hard work and working in many practices and facilities, Dan finally found a practice to buy in Rancho Santa Fe. He had undertaken many residencies to further his capabilities in aesthetic dentistry. His ambition and desire was to produce a smile (like his) for patients that would enhance their lives and make them proud and confident. Dr. Kershner was within weeks of finishing the complete remodel of his practice when he learned of his illness. He was unable to ever go back to work, but his care and compassion for his patients never waned.
Dr. Dan (another known nickname) was one of the most generous people I ever knew and would truly give anyone the shirt off his back. He worked in several clinics and facilities, donating his time and skill for the benefit of others, throughout his educational and professional careers. He volunteered at the UCSD Free Dental Clinic where he was instrumental in setting up the dental care for this non-profit organization. He additionally donated many hours of dental care for the homeless and working poor. Dr. Dan also traveled to many Caribbean countries, mainly the Virgin Islands, to assist and provide dental care for the needy in those countries.
Dan had a characteristic smile and a look that captured the hearts of everyone he encountered. He loved to surf, ski, dance, party, and cook, all of which he did with gusto and grace. The music he loved portrayed his life#'s pleasures of surfing, sailing, diving and sipping cuba libras on the beach. Danny traveled to many exotic places and treated the loves of his life to romantic adventures in many tropical paradises. Danny would go to great lengths and expense to show his love and adoration for the women in his life. He loved to spoil them as part of his generous and romantic nature.
Dan was the connection to many circles of friends and associates as he resided in North County for over 40 years. He attended all local schools and colleges, had worked at the Scripps Hospitals, San Diego area clinics and dental practices. He was socially active and known to so many in the area. I never knew or met anyone who didn#'t like Dan. Dan brought many people together in life and has done so again in his passing. He will continue to bring people together in his memory as we rejoice the life of a man who had it all, would give it all and left us with it all to remember and celebrate. Thanks for the memories Dano! We all love you. May you sit amongst the angels, surfing the heavens, giving us yours and
God#'s blessing as you watch over us.
There will be a memorial service to scatter Dan#'s ashes in the ocean as he wished.
