Elsie Layton, 90

VISTA - Elsie L. Layton, 90, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, in Fallbrook.

She was born Nov. 24, 1915, in Illinois. She worked at Camp Pendleton. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Vista.

Ms. Layton was preceded in death by her husband, Winton Horace Layton, in 1969.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, 1999 El Camino Real in Oceanside with the Rev. Linda Olson officiating.

Lucille Nelsen, 94

CARLSBAD - Lucille Helen Nelsen, 94, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.

Born Sept. 28, 1911, in Bevent, Wis., she lived in Carlsbad for 10 years. She lived in Sugar Camp, Wis., in the summer and Carlsbad in the winter. She enjoyed making apple pies from her apple trees.

Mrs. Nelsen was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard "Red" Nelsen; parents Anton and Helen Walkowski; brothers Joseph Walkowski, Florian Walkowski, George Walkowski, Dave Walkowski, Tony Walkowski and Mike Walkowski; and sister Ceceila Walkowski.

She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Gladys and Arthur Landowski of Bevent, and Pamela Hildebrand of Carlsbad; grandchildren Valerie, Noreen, Laura, Roberta, Angela, Terry Lynn and Loreen; and 10 great-grandchildren.

No public services are planned.

Neftali Plasencia, 76

OCEANSIDE - Neftali Plasencia, 76, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at his home.

Born July 4, 1929, in Michoacan, Mexico, he lived in Oceanside for 38 years.

Mr. Plasencia, is survived by his wife of 54 years, Maria Guadalupe of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Carlos Plasencia of Oceanside, Nettalie Maria Plasencia of Imperial Beach, and Rigoberto and Martha Plasencia of San Jacinto; daughters and sons-in-law Teresa and Max Raceles of Bonsall, Rosa and Michael Hoy of Fallbrook, and Flor and Isidro Fragozo of Temecula; 28 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation and viewing are scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Eternal Hills Mortuary.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. Burial will follow at 2:15 p.m. at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Emily Sexsmith, 94

VISTA - Emily Catherine Sexsmith, 94, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006.

Born May 1, 1911, in Braddock, Pa., she was a longtime resident of Vista. She was in many civic groups including PEO, the Women#'s Club of Vista, the Vista Rotary Club, the Buena Vista Adobe, the Palomar College and Tri-City Hospital foundations, the North County Scots, and the Vista Ranchos Historical Society. She was a community volunteer for many organizations. She was honored as the Citizen of the Year.

Mrs. Sexsmith was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, George Sexsmith, in 1991.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Chester and Constance Dippel of Hot Springs, Ark.; and sister-in-law Betty Dippel of Florence, Ore.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Grace Presbyterian Church, 1450 E. Vista Way in Vista with the Rev. Tom Straeter officiating.

Private inurnment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale is planned.

Robert Evensen, 70

OCEANSIDE - Robert Bjorn Evensen, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at his home.

Born June 23, 1935, in Chicago, he lived in Oceanside and Traverse City, Mich. He was an art teacher for 30 years. He retired from the Proviso Township High School in Illinois.

Mr. Evensen is survived by his wife, Helen Evensen of Oceanside; son Kevin Evensen of Ottawa, Ill.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the Church of St. Thomas More in Oceanside with the Rev. Michael Ratajczak officiating.

Private inurnment at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook, Ill., is planned.

Andrew Hopkins Jr., 80

CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA - Andrew Hopkins Jr., 80, died of respiratory failure, Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.

Born Aug. 25, 1925, in Baxter Springs, Kan., he lived in Cardiff-by-the-Sea for 45 years. He retired Jan. 1, 1988 from Hughes Aircraft Corp. in Carlsbad.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a soundman second class. He was a member of the Pacific View Baptist Church in Encinitas and the American Legion, Encinitas chapter.

Mr. Hopkins was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Annella Hopkins; and brothers Bruce Hopkins and Donald Hopkins.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Talitha C. Hopkins of Cardiff; daughters and sons-in-law Mary and Brian Rasmussen of San Marcos and Martha and Robert Phillips of Escondido; brother and sisters-in-law Douglas and Marguerite Hopkins of Rosamond and Anneibell Hopkins of Lynnewood, Wash.; sister and brother-in-law Joy and Lewis Driver of Chehalis, Wash; and grandchildren Celia Phillips and Samantha Phillips.

Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Eternal Hills Mortuary, 1999 El Camino Real in Oceanside.

Sonia Estrellon, 65

OCEANSIDE - Sonia delos Reyes Estrellon, 65, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.

Born Oct. 20, 1940, in Manila, Philippine Islands, she lived in Oceanside for 18 years. She was a member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church.

Mrs. Estrellon is survived by her husband of 38 years, Ted G. Estrellon of Oceanside; son Tedson Estrellon of Oceanside; daughter and son-in-law Rocelynn and Ian Monteyro of Solana Beach; brother and sister-in-law Ernest and Christine delos Reyes of the Philippine Islands; and sisters and brother-in-law Araceli and Cipriano Cuevas and Jovita Vera, all of the Philippine Islands.

A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church, 4300 Oceanside Blvd. in Oceanside. Private inurnment is planned.

Leonard Condry, 79

SAN MARCOS - Leonard Condry, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006.

Born Nov. 11, 1926, in McAllister, Okla., he lived in San Marcos for 14 years and in San Diego County for 60 years. He was a self-employed equipment operator and contractor for 45 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Condry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pamela Condry of San Marcos; sons and daughters-in-law Mike and Linda Condry of Menifee, and Jim and Lisa Condry and Patrick and Donna Condry, all of Escondido; daughter Lindy Condry of Escondido; sister and brother-in-law Rosemarie and Harry Bateman of Escondido; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary in Escondido.

Sylvia Ortiz, 88

CEANSIDE - Sylvia Ortiz, 88, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006.

Born Dec. 31, 1917, in Chichuaun, Mexico, she lived in Oceanside for 30 years. She was a homemaker for 59 years. The first time she visited the United States was during the Mexican Revolution. She became a citizen in the 1950s.

Mrs. Ortiz was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Ortiz, in 2001.

She is survived by her son, Ben Ortiz of Oceanside; daughter and son-in-law Emily and John Wichmann of Oceanside; sister Tona Padilla of Rialto; grandchildren Chris Broyles, Rachel Hovenden, Dan Ortiz, Doug Ortiz, Desiree Ortiz-Davis, Ryan Ortiz and Emilia Ortiz; and five great-grandchildren.

Viewing is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 17, at Eternal Hills Mortuary, 1999 El Camino Real in Oceanside.

Ruth Nelson, 79

CARLSBAD - Ruth Nelson, 79, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at her home.

Born Nov. 6, 1926, in Sycamore, Ill., she lived in Carlsbad for eight years. She was an executive secretary. She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Encinitas and the 600 Bowling Club.

Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her daughter, Candy Nelson.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Lawrence "Lon" Nelson of Carlsbad; daughters Linda Comunale of Encinitas and Lonna Newson of Pensacola, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 552 S. El Camino Real in Encinitas.

Helen Chase-Tweed, 79

OCEANSIDE - Helen Chase-Tweed, 79, died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure, Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at her home.

Born July 9, 1926, in Los Angeles, she lived in Oceanside for 16 years. She was a member of the Red hill Tennis Club Net Nuts, the National Charity League and PEO.

She was a member of the first Presbyterian Church in Oceanside. She enjoyed traveling, photography, animals, especially large dogs, and entertaining.

Mrs. Chase-Tweed was preceded in death by her first husband, Wallace P. Chase, in 1997.

She is survived by her husband of four years, Joseph F. Tweed of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Brian and Sandra Chase of Redmond, Wash.; daughters and son-in-law Dian Chase of Seattle, and Sharon and Bruce Sauer of Fountain Valley; and grandchildren Melissa, Jason, Kelly, Kevin and Justine.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. today, Jan. 17, at the Ocean Clubhouse in Oceanside. Private burial at sea is planned.

James Phillips Jr., 56

ENCINITAS - James Harmon Phillips Jr., 56, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005.

Born Dec. 14, 1949, in South Kingstown, R.I., he lived in Encinitas since 1951. He enjoyed the ocean, body-surfing, swimming, fishing and diving, music, rock hunting and sunsets. He was a gardener, and a student of history and spiritual healing.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his sisters, Sharon Luther of Solana Beach and Kathleen Phillips of Carlsbad; and brothers Neal Phillips of New Hampshire, and Cory Phillips of San Marcos.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, in Cardiff.

Margaret Benz, 95

FALLBROOK - Margaret J. Benz, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006.

Born Sept. 25, 1910, in Philadelphia, she lived at Silvergate in Fallbrook for seven years. She lived on and off bases in South Carolina, Virginia, North Carolina, Philadelphia, New York and Washington D.C.

She was a volunteer and was named Parris Island's Mother of the Year.

Mrs. Benz was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Benz, in 1988.

She is survived by her sister, Regina M. Byers of Shreveport, La.; sons-in-law William T. Macy and J.L. Hunter; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. Inurnment will follow at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery.

Robyn Carbaugh

ENCINITAS - Robyn Lynn Carbaugh, died of breast cancer, Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2005.

She was a native San Diegan and lived in Encinitas for 21 years. She was a member and a volunteer at the Church of the Nativity in Rancho Santa Fe. She was an advocate for the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation and participated in the SGK walks for seven years. Her team, Robyn's Hood, participated in the Race for the Cure. She helped raise money for the UCSD Burn Center. She started the annual Santa Toy Drive in her neighborhood.

Mrs. Carbaugh is survived by her husband, Jim Carbaugh; children Scott, Katie and Brian; father and stepmother William and Laureen Clark; brothers Bill Clark and Bob Clark; and sister Cheryl Clark.

A memorial service was held Jan. 13, at the Church of the Nativity. Interment followed at El Camino Memorial Park.

Robert Price, 81

NORTH COUNTY - Robert Roy Price, 81, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at Palomar Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 8, 1924, in rural Visalia. He had a flower farm for 20 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He worked in civil service at the shipyards in Long Beach for 25 years. He was on the civil service commission and served as mayor of Signal Hill.

Mr. Price was preceded in death by his first wife, Connie; and second wife Jackie Price.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Coffeen of Portland, Ore.; son and daughter-in-law Richard and Diane Price of Valley Center and James Price of Encino.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 15.

Frank Garcia, 79

WILDOMAR -- Frank Curtis Garcia, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta.

He was born April 14, 1926, in Morell, Neb. He was a self-employed truck driver for 20 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Garcia was preceded in death by his parents, Filadelfio and Huberta Cortinas Garcia; and son, Tony. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Esther Holquin Garcia; daughters Deborah Osollo of Eagle Rock and Roberta Trotter of Chandler, Ariz., Sandy, Francine, Marcella and LaReina; sons Rudy Garcia of Manheim, Pa., and Frank Jr.; sister, Delia; 20 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory, 26770 Murrieta Road in Sun City. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Miller-Jones Mortuary. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery.

Joshua Bellare, 18

MURRIETA -- Joshua Lee Bellare, 18, died of injuries he received in an automobile accident, Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Born Dec. 14, 1987, in Redondo Beach, he lived in Murrieta for one year. He was in his senior year of high school and was a member of the Oak Springs Community Church Youth Group in Murrieta.

Joshua is survived by his mother, Diane Bellare of Aguanga; father and stepmother, Danny and Kathy Bellare of Murrieta; and brothers Joey and Justin of Murrieta.

Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Laurel Cemetery in Murrieta.

Robert Thomas Jr., 64

OCEANSIDE - Robert E. Thomas Jr., 64, died of cancer, Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at La Paloma Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 5, 1941, in Boston, he lived in Oceanside for 30 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He graduated in 1959 from San Dieguito High School and then USC. He was an avid sportsman, and was a member of the Oceanside Surf Club. He started the business, Hobie Cat of Oceanside. Bob was ranked No. 2 in the world in 18-foot Hobie Cat sailing. Bob received the Rehabilitation Recognition Award for South Bay Rehabilitation Center in deep appreciation for 20 years of volunteer service.

Mr. Thomas is survived by his father, Robert E. Thomas Sr. of Tulsa, Okla.; brother Daniel Smith of Encinitas; sisters Barbee Kennedy of Charlotsville, Va., and Carol Ann Smith of Anza.

A private cremation is planned.

Walter Wallace

Walter "Walt#" Paul Wallace died on January 11, 2006, at the age of 95. Throughout his life, Walt proved himself to be a kind and caring man, always looking out for the others. He will be missed.

Walt immigrated to the United States from Lithuania, in 1923, with his mother and his younger brother, Anthony. They joined Walt#'s father in America #- crossing on the first boat to Ellis Island. Walt#'s memoirs are held there.

From the very beginning, Walt was self-motivated and supported his family, graduating at 15 from high school. After high school, Walt obtained his Bachelor#'s of Science and masters degrees in metallurgy from Washington State. Walt also secured a Phd. in engineering from UCLA.

Walt then began a family#-moving from Los Angeles to Encinitas in 1955, and joining General Atomics as a metallurgical engineer. He was instrumental in bringing in numerous lateral hires to General Atomics during his long tenure with that company.

Following his retirement in 1975, Walt worked as a metallurgical consultant. He also became involved in the Encinitas community, even once running for City Council. He walked countless miles with his wife, Enis, going door to door securing signatures in support of the incorporation of Encinitas as a city. Walt#'s efforts were key to Encinitas#' subsequent incorporation. Walt received several commendations from the city on his work for the community of Encinitas.

Walt was well known for his spirited letters to the editors of several newspapers in San Diego County. When he lost his sight more recently, he continued to correspond with newspaper editors# - ever-wanting to better his community.

In addition to raising three children, Walt assisted in raising grandchildren and great-grandchildren, even coaching and managing Bobby Sox teams.

Walt is survived by his three children: Patricia Faris of Austin, Texas, Wally Wallace of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Kathy Barry of Encinitas; five grandchildren: Patty Plumbley of Arizona, Debbie Plumbley of San Diego, Robbie Plumbley of Arizona, Jessica Logerberg of La Costa, and Justin Cox of Encinitas; and three great-grandchildren: Sienna Govei, Alana Saenz, and Jake Plumbley.

In lieu of flowers, Walt#'s family asks that donations be made in his name to Father Joe or St. Jude#'s Children#'s Hospital.

Marcus and Ruth Paulos

A loving couple passed through this world to the next together as they have lived together as husband and wife for 64 years.

Ruth T. Paulos was born May 19, 1905, in Rexburg, Idaho, passed away January 12, 2006. Ruth was an expert seamstress. She could crochet and knit with the best.

She filled her grandchildren#'s needs for sweaters and afghans for many years. She was also quite a historian and spent many hours finding historical data on the many places that they lived. A lovely lady with a heart of pure gold.

Marcus #"Mark#" Paulos was born June 12, 1913, in Brigham City, Utah, passed away January 4, 2006. Mark spent four years in the Marines in the mid #'30s. Mark worked in the aircraft industry in the early 1940s. He courted Ruth, a young widow with three young sons, for a number of years. He married Ruth, the love of his life, in 1941, in Los Angeles. They spent many wonderful years in New York, Texas and California, before settling in Oceanside in 1982. Mark was a Mason and an avid golfer.

They are survived by their loving daughter, Patti Anderson-White of Tucson, Arizona; granddaughter Kathi Wilkins; grandsons Ken and Kevin Anderson; plus numerous great-grandchildren.

Mark and Ruth loved life together and left life together. They are now dancing amidst the clouds to sounds of angels. We'll cherish the time we had you and will hold tight to our memories.

Lolita Esther Childress

Lolita Esther Childress, 85, died after a brief illness, Thursday, January 12, 2006, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born October 21, 1920, in Seaford, Delaware, Lolita came from a large family of 10 children. After marrying Howard Childress, the couple moved with their two young sons to San Diego in 1959, where Lolita lived until moving to Escondido in 2000. She enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casino - and was frequently lucky!

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Howard Childress and all nine siblings.

She is survived by her son, John Childress of Carson City, Nevada; son and daughter-in-law Guy and Debbora Childress of Escondido; grandchildren Leigh, Shay, Jacob and Kellie; and great-grandchildren Keegan and Grace.

No services are planned. Lolita's remains will be interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, alongside her husband, Howard.

Leon G. Baron, 90

Leon G. Baron passed away on January 1, 2006, at his home in Lake San Marcos. Born April 5, 1915, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Riverhead, N.Y., he graduated from Riverhead High School in 1932, and the University of Southern California in 1937. Leon practiced law in Los Angeles until 1942, when he terminated his law practice to serve in the Army for five years during World War II. In 1947, he returned to Riverhead to join his uncle in a family owned department store. He was active in Rotary, Masons, served as director on the board of the Suffolk County National Bank, and was president of the Baiting Hollow Country Club, that he help found. He was also a member of the South Hampton Golf Club. In 1975, he retired, married and moved to Lake San Marcos, California, where he enjoyed golf, travel, Rotary and all the friends he made over the years.

He is survived by his wife, Belva Baron of Lake San Marcos; his sister, Shirley Levy of Laguna Hills, California; and step-sons Wes (Darlene) Walker of Roselle, Illinois, and Brent Walker of Carol Stream, Ill.; and many other loving family members.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Elizabeth Hospice 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025, or a charity of your choice.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive, San Marcos, CA 92068. The service begins at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Dinkel officiating.

Dorothy Burks, 94

OCEANSIDE - Dorothy Goodin Burks, 94, died of complications from a heart attack, Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.

Born Dec. 18, 1911, in Bonsall, she lived in Oceanside for 83 years. She graduated from Oceanside-Carlsbad High School in 1929, and Kelsy-Jenny Commercial College in 1932. She retired from the city of Oceanside Water Department after 37 years of service. She was a member of Beta Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi for more than 60 years, a member of the Native Daughters Golden West for more than 50 years, a member of Stella Maris YLI for more than 50 years and a member of San Luis Rey Parish.

Dorothy had traveled the world and when not traveling she enjoyed bingo and the company of her close friends.

Mrs. Burks was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Burks, in 1993; mother Lola Goodin in 1972; and father Albert Goodin in 1968.

She is survived by her brothers Lorin Goodin and Glenn Goodin; two nieces and two nephews.

Viewing is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 17, at Oceanside Mortuary, 602 S. Coast Highway in Oceanside. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Oceanside Mortuary. Private interment at Oceanview Cemetery in Oceanside is planned.

Oceanside Mortuary is handling arrangements.
