OCEANSIDE -- Police conducted a DUI checkpoint Friday night and early Saturday morning, screening 298 vehicles, handing out 14 citations and impounding 10 vehicles, according to the Oceanside Police Department.
No arrests were made for drunken driving, as all eight drivers asked to take sobriety tests passed, said Sgt. Kelan Poorman.
Ten drivers, however, lost their cars during the checkpoint either because they had no license or were driving on a suspended license. State law allows police to impound cars for 30 days if the driver has no license or has a suspended license.
The checkpoint was held on the 1300 block of North Santa Fe Drive, from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday, Poorman said.
The citations issued were for violations including marijuana possession, driving without insurance and driving either without a license or on a suspended license, the sergeant said.
The aim of the checkpoints, which are funded by state grants, is to reduce drunken driving and promote traffic safety in the city, police said.
