SAN MARCOS -- Six students at San Elijo Elementary school have been diagnosed with chicken pox, San Diego County health officials said Friday.
School and public health officials urged parents to make sure that their children had received the recommended two chicken pox vaccinations. The shots are typically given between the ages of 12 and 15 months, and again between 4 and 6 years of age.
All six students at San Elijo Elementary had had only one dose of the vaccination, officials said.
School officials have informed staff and parents of students who may have been exposed and sent letters or e-mails to all parents.
Chicken pox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella virus. It typically causes fever and a rash of blisters. The virus is easily spread by coughing, sneezing or direct contact with the blisters.
