LA JOLLA - Private donations to UC San Diego in the latest fiscal year totaled $131.9 million - the second-highest amount in the school's history, it was announced today.

In the 1999-2000 year, $135 million was donated to the university, said James Langley, vice-chancellor of external relations.

The largest donation in 2003-04 was $30 million from Ernest Rady and the Rady Family Foundation to name the School of Management.

Irwin and Joan Jacobs gave $18.3 million, as part of their pledge of $110 million to the Jacobs School of Engineering.

Fred Kavli and the Kavli Foundation gave $7.5 million to create the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind

"This remarkable support from friends and alumni is arising from a growing awareness that a gift to UCSD will result in a substantial educational, cultural and economic return to the San Diego community and beyond," Langley said.

The school wants to raise $1 billion in private funds through 2007. Started in 2000, the campaign has raised $606.8 million so far, Langley said.
