SAN DIEGO -- Transit agencies in San Diego will receive $27.2 million from the state to replace old buses and to help fund a North County rail line, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Friday.

The Metropolitan Transit System will get $18.6 million to replace buses, while the North County Transit District will get $8.6 million for the 22-mile Sprinter rail line between Oceanside and Escondido, according to Schwarzenegger.

The money will come from funds generated by Proposition 1B, a $20 billion infrastructure bond approved by voters in 2006.

North County Transit District spokesman Peter Aadland said Friday that the money is the first installment in what the agency believes will be a total of $50 million in future payments from the proposition. He said the district has already spent much of the Sprinter funds it expects to receive from the referendum.

"We have been spending TransNet (half-cent sales tax) money, and the (Prop.) 1B money will go right back into the TransNet program," Aadland said. "It's not like we have received $8 million dollars that we don't know what to do with."
