SAN DIEGO — San Diego Gas & Electric announced Thursday that it will soon begin experiments in transmitting broadband digital data over its power lines.
The first test will begin Sept. 1 in Kearny Mesa. Future phases will take place in other areas of the county and could last up to a year.
If successful, broadband internet services could be available via a customer's electrical outlet.
"If the technology is compatible with our electric facilities, it may pave the way for a host of utility functions that will benefit customers, including shorter outages," said William Reed, SDG&E's senior vice president.
SDG&E will test remote control of utility equipment, obtain instant grid condition status reports and check compatibility with a system that automatically measures customer energy use.
