SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Air & Space Museum announced today that $35,000 in college scholarship money will be distributed to 19 high school seniors.
The students, who filled out an application, wrote an essay and received teacher recommendations, plan to pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The awards come from the museum's three scholarship funds: the Bill Gibbs, R.A. "Ken" Rearwin and Convair Alumni Association funds.
Gibbs scholarship winners are Sonam Dabholkar of Westview High School; Elliott Spore of High Tech High; Matthew Thompson of San Diego High School; Weston Thompson of Valhalla High School; and Andrew Swingle and Bailey Ward, both from Mission Hills High School.
Rearwin Scholars are Sandy Nguyen of San Pasqual High School; Ryan Robinson of Santa Fe Christian School; and Lena Salaita of Escondido High School.
Convair honorees are Alison Aragon and Eric Payne of Steele Canyon High School; Brandon Burbach of Mt. Carmel High School; Joseph Coleman and Catherine Lorentz of Poway High School; Julie Hull of Patrick Henry High School; Tony Nguyen of the Preuss School; Catherine Pioneda of Mar Vista High School; Eileen Russell of Cathedral Catholic High School; and Alisa Wolf of San Dieguito Academy.
The museum has awarded 161 scholarships to date, totaling $428,500. This year's winners will be honored at a ceremony at the museum on Wednesday.
