Zoo security guard robbed at gunpoint

SAN DIEGO - Police searched today for a man who robbed a San Diego Zoo security guard gathering the day's revenues from shops inside the closed attraction.

The robbery at at 2920 Zoo Drive in Balboa Park was reported at 6:28 p.m. yesterday, said San Diego police Sgt. Rich Nemetz.

The guard told police he was about to make his final pickup for the day when a man approached him, pointed a handgun and ordered him into a security vehicle.

Once inside, the man ordered the guard to drive through a zoo exit and onto Park Boulevard, where the guard was allowed to get out and the robber took the wheel, Nemetz said.

The guard was not injured and police found the stolen security vehicle a few hours later abandoned at Richmond and Upas streets.

The man is described as a Hispanic or white man in his early 20s, 5-feet- 9, weighing around 170 pounds. He wore a disguise, including Groucho Marx glasses, a fake nose and a black afro wig.
