SAN DIEGO -- County health officials urged residents Thursday not to use an organic baby food produced by Earth's Best, after the federal Food and Drug Administration issued a warning.
Earth's Best's manufacturer, Hain Celestial Group, initiated a voluntary recall earlier this month of Earth's Best Organic 2 Apple Peach Barley Wholesome Breakfast baby food. No illnesses related to the product had been reported to Earth's Best or the FDA. But county officials said they still wanted to alert the public because botulism can be fatal.
The baby food was sold in individual jars and in variety packs in local stores and on the Earth's Best Web site. The lid number for the baby food is PF6J14NP.
Jack Miller of the county's Department of Environmental Health said county officials had called local retailers to make sure they knew of the federal warning. He said all the stores that carried the product had already pulled it from their shelves.
Miller said the county didn't have any idea how much of the product was sold in San Diego County, but that "it didn't sound like it was a lot."
Officials said symptoms of botulism poisoning can occur within six hours to two weeks. They include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth and muscle weakness.
