SAN YSIDRO - A man suspected of smuggling people across the border was shot and wounded at a San Ysidro motel Wednesday in a confrontation with a U.S. Border Patrol agent, authorities said.
The shooting occurred at around 3:30 a.m. in room 232 at the Economy Inn on Via de San Ysidro, off Interstate 5, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.
Border Patrol officials said agents received a tip that illegal immigrants were being brought to room 232 and found two men inside the room. One of them was under bed covers and moving around suspiciously, as though he had a concealed gun, officials said.
An agent fired one shot, wounding the man in the leg, officials said.
The man was taken to Paradise Valley Hospital, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Border Patrol officials did not immediately say whether a gun was recovered.
Neither of the men found in the room are illegal immigrants but one is a known smuggler in the area, Border Patrol officials said.
