VISTA -- An alleged gang member pleaded guilty Thursday to voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of a pair of rivals, including one who died, during a brawl in San Marcos.

Ivan Chavez, 17, who was prosecuted as an adult, will be sentenced to 16 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced March 20 by Superior Court Judge Daniel Goldstein.

The charges stemmed from a June 14, 2006, incident at a market on Richmar Avenue that claimed the life of Julio Ramirez-Rodriguez, 18, and wounded Jesse Ernesto Reyes, 19.

Another teenager, Robert Lopez, 17, stood trial and was convicted Dec. 4 of first-degree murder, premeditated attempted murder and gang and weapons allegations.

Deputy District Attorney Geoff Allard told jurors at Lopez's trial that Lopez and other gang members sought out Ramirez-Rodriguez and chased him and Reyes across Autumn Drive, a set of railroad tracks, and Mission Avenue before catching up to the victims at La Fiesta Grande Market on Richmar Avenue.

Both young men were stabbed repeatedly, Allard said at the trial.

Fallbrook man gets 16 years for manslaughter

VISTA -- A Fallbrook man was sentenced Wednesday to 16 years in prison for the shooting death of a neighbor who was wielding a baseball bat.

Michael Ray Estrada, 27, pleaded guilty in October to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the Jan. 7 death of Victor Hugo Arreola-Pablo, 32, at a Fallbrook apartment complex.

A prosecutor had said Arreola-Pablo had had numerous run-ins with Estrada before the fatal shooting.

Estrada's attorney has said the case involved "unreasonable self-defense" because of Estrada's "misconception" that his life was in danger.
