RIVERSIDE -- Riverside County officials are set to kick off the search for a new sheriff after Bob Doyle said last month that he would leave the position to sit on the California Board of Parole Hearings.

The county Board of Supervisors are expected Tuesday to sketch out the search process and discuss possible replacements for Doyle, who was first elected sheriff in 2002.

A sheriff chosen by the board would serve until the next election. Doyle's resignation, which follows his re-election in November, takes effect in mid-October.

The board could tap Undersherriff Neil Lingle, Doyle's right-hand man. Such a move is common in many cases when department heads leave, according to the county's executive office. Board members could also nominate potential candidates at the meeting Tuesday, according to executives.

The board meets at 9 a.m. at 4080 Lemon St., Riverside.
