NORCO ---- Two people were arrested Tuesday for allegedly tossing two footballs containing cell phones, chargers, marijuana and tobacco over a Norco prison fence.
The deflated footballs containing seven bundles of tobacco and 29.4 grams of marijuana had been taped closed and tossed over the fence at the California Rehabilitation Center on Fifth Street and Western Avenue about 3:15 a.m., said Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Adam Vallejo.
A prison guard spotted the footballs going over the fence and called other deputies to help him retrieve the pigskins and detain the suspects.
Gayle Nicho Washington-Varela, 21, of San Diego, and 34-year-old Carlos Donnielle Spencer of Escondido were arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of possessing, selling or transporting marijuana, conspiracy to commit a felony and smuggling a controlled substance into a prison, jail records show.
