Temecula developer Bill Johnson has been given more time to craft a development plan for his Vail Lake resort.
Johnson's proposal to annex 7,000 acres along Highway 79 South into the special citrus-vineyard zoning created exclusively for the Temecula Valley Wine Country and to build 2-acre estate homes there went to the Riverside County Planning Commission on Wednesday.
Because Johnson has yet to complete a plan and had asked for extra time, commissioners postponed action until May 5.
The proposed project runs outside the parameters of the county's blueprint for development in that area, and therefore requires what is known as a general plan amendment.
County planners have recommended not initiating such an amendment to add the property to the vineyard zone. They say the haven for fishing, camping and hiking is not a good fit with the wineries. Johnson has disagreed, however, saying he intends to build wineries at the resort.
