Local high school students are being asked to design the environmental award that will be given to "Avatar" director James Cameron later this year.
Cameron is being honored by the Santa Margarita Group of the Sierra Club, Save Our Southwest Hills and the Endangered Habitats League for the environmental messages woven into the movie "Avatar," the blockbuster that involves an interstellar mining company battling with a planet's natives over a precious mineral.
The winning design for the award ---- dubbed the Temecula Environmental Award for Outstanding Social Responsibility in Media ---- will be used as the template for the physical trophy.
In keeping with the theme of the award, the students have been asked to use recycled or natural materials wherever possible.
The winners will be announced next week and all of the entries will be on display at the Grace Mellman Library, 41000 County Center Drive, starting Monday.
