The Vista Conservancy on Saturday will open a 2,000-foot walking trail extension through city property that formerly held a mobile-home park.

The conservancy for the past few months has been working on cleaning up the vacant land, once home to the Sycamore Creek Mobile Home Park, to make way for the extension that will nearly double the length of the trail and create a pedestrian link between Brengle Terrace Park and Wildwood Park.

"It looks like a little slice of paradise out there now," Conservancy spokesman Mac MacFarlane said.

Saturday's opening ceremony begins at noon at the trail extension at 751 E. Vista Way. It will feature a farmer's market, live bluegrass music, classic cars on display, face painting for youths and comments from local politicians including San Diego County Supervisor Bill Horn and members of the Vista City Council.

Food from Chili's and Sunrise Cafe in Vista will be for sale. Proceeds will go to the Vista Conservancy.

Parking will be available inside the former mobile home park and in lots around the trail's entrance.

MacFarlane said several portraits of local celebrities from the Conservancy's Walk of Fame project will be on display and a machine will generate a rainbow around 4:30 p.m. The farmer's market will close at 5 p.m.

MacFarlane said that for the past few months volunteers and workers have been removing chunks of concrete from the site, wiping away graffiti and clearing brush to prepare the trail extension for the public.

The city allowed the conservancy temporary use of the property and pledged $41,000 to the clean-up project in November.

The nonprofit is also constructing a 2,000-foot mesh fence along the trail to create an open-air gallery where works of art will be displayed. On Saturday, about 100 feet of the fence will be used to display portraits of celebrities with ties to North County, including Tony Hawk and Shaun White. The portraits are part of the first exhibition, the Walk of Fame, that will be displayed beginning May 30.

Beginning Saturday, the trail will be open from dawn to dusk each day. It will also be patrolled at night by private security guards to keep vandals away.
