VISTA —— About 30 people stood with candles on the sidewalk in front of Vista City Hall on Monday evening, during the second of three vigils planned to coincide with the days that three men were shot to death by deputies a month ago.

Family members of Jorge Ramirez joined with member of the Escondido-based Coalition for Peace, Justice and Dignity, which organized the vigil. After about an hour in front of City Hall, the group moved to the site where Ramirez was shot —— in the 1100 block of Lupine Hills Drive —— and erected a memorial.

This was the third time the family had put up a memorial, according to Maribel Ramirez, the sister of Jorge Ramirez. Both times it was taken down, she said.

"All the family wants is a little respect for the memorial," she said.

Ramirez was fatally shot by a deputy July 29 after he reached into his clothing as deputies chased him as a possible suspect in an armed robbery earlier that night, authorities said. Deputies said they thought Ramirez may have had a gun, but he was armed only with a knife, officials said.

The family of Jesus Eduardo Manzo is also planning a vigil for Sept. 1, near where he was killed on Newport Drive on Aug. 1. A deputy shot Manzo during another pursuit as he reached toward his hip for what the officer thought might be a gun but turned out to be a multipurpose tool, authorities said.
