VISTA - The theme of Sunday's second annual Vista Family Fun Fest street fair is "bigger and better," organizers said.

That means about 40 more booths than last year, as well as a variety of other events and entertainment including children's rides and a rock-climbing wall, said Jim Baumann, executive director of the Vista Chamber of Commerce. The chamber is cosponsoring the event with the Village Business Association.

The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday along Main Street and East Broadway Avenue in downtown Vista.

"Our goal is to provide a fun day for families and to show off our downtown," said Baumann. "It brings a lot of people who may not venture into our historic center."

Organizers are expecting between 8,000 and 10,000 visitors throughout the day.

Those in attendance can shop at more than 150 booths featuring arts and crafts, jewelry and clothing that will line both Main and Broadway, from Indiana Street to Citrus Avenue.

About 10 of the booths will be dedicated to food, highlighting cuisines from around the world, Baumann said. Stands will offer Greek, Mexican, Thai and Irish dishes, as well as fair favorites such as funnel cakes and kettle corn.

On the main stage at the Flag Pavilion, at Citrus and East Broadway avenues, local band Mario Carrillo and the Bashers will be playing periodically from 10:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Other entertainment will include performances by Tanya's Dance Demo, Shadowridge Jazzercise and the United Studio of Self Defense.

In tribute to October as fire safety month, the Vista Fire Department will be holding demonstrations of the Jaws of Life, fire extinguisher use and how to safely evacuate a burning house. The department will also have about a dozen booths set up on fire safety education.

The event is part of the chamber and business association's biannual street fair. In the spring the two partnered up for the Vista Village Chocolate Festival in May. Both will be held annually, the chocolate festival in the spring and the family fun fest in the fall, Baumann said.

"It's free and there's something for everyone," he said. "There's a whole lot of things to do."
