VISTA ---- A 92-year-old Vista man contacted authorities and told them he appears to be the driver in a hit-and-run accident on Friday night that killed a 15-year-old Vista skateboarder, a sheriff's deputy said Monday.

Lucas Giaconelli, a Rancho Buena Vista High School freshman, was struck from behind by a car as he rode his skateboard with friends on Thibodo Road about 7 p.m., authorities said. The car did not stop.

On Saturday night, about 40 people gathered at the crash site for a memorial. Deputy Ed Macken said he was conducting traffic control around the event when the elderly man approached him and told him he had hit something in the area the night before, but thought it was an animal or an object.

The man, whose name was not released, said he didn't realize someone had died until he saw the vigil, Macken said.

After being examined at the sheriff’s crime lab, the Vista man's car has been tentatively identified as the one that hit the teen, Macken said.

Deputies are still collecting evidence and interviewing people. At the investigation's conclusion, the Sheriff's Department will decide whether there is enough evidence to forward a criminal case to the district attorney's office, Macken said.
