VISTA -- A man who stole a sport utility vehicle Monday with a 4-month-old baby boy in the back seat returned the SUV minutes later with the infant unharmed, authorities said.
The incident was reported at 12:45 p.m. at an apartment complex on the 200 block of Grapevine Road, Vista sheriff's Sgt. Ness said.
The baby's mother was outside of her 2005 Jeep Cherokee when the suspect came up and drove away with the SUV, Ness said.
About five minutes later, the suspect returned to the area, abandoned the Cherokee with the baby inside and fled, the sergeant said.
"Everything turned out fine," Ness said. The suspect had not been located by Monday night.
