WILDOMAR - Sisters Mickylene and Priscilla Delgado, two shy but driven Wildomar teens, have spent the last 10 months drumming up support for a cause they say isn't only near and dear to their hearts, but to those of countless youths throughout their community.
"We want a skate park," Mickylene said Wednesday. "Like, really bad."
There isn't much for youths their age to do in Wildomar, the 16-year-old added, so many turn to skateboarding. And they try to skate at many places throughout the community, such as parks, schools and business parking lots.
But there's a problem with that.
"We always get kicked out of places," Mickylene said.
"It stinks," her 15-year-old sister said.
So the two, who call themselves the Wildomar Skaters, are appealing to county officials and to the Wildomar Parks Formation Committee to help them build a skate park in the community. Such parks, which provide ramps and space for skaters to do their thing, have been built in Murrieta, Temecula and Lake Elsinore.
Committee member Bridgette Moore said recently that she's met with the Delgado sisters and is sympathetic to their cause. She's confident the money to build a skate park can be raised, she said.
She's advising the girls to do more homework. The more work they do, she said, the easier it will be to get local officials on board.
The first step is finding land for the park.
"It's needed," Moore said. "It's definitely needed. I'm encouraging them to find out the cost, to find out how much it would cost to build a 2-acre skate park so at least we have an idea."
Since starting a petition drive in August, Mickylene and Priscilla have collected more than 700 signatures in support of a park. Whenever they get a chance, they go door to door in Wildomar and try to get signatures from adults and youths alike.
It all started when Debbie Delgado, the girls' mother, read a newspaper article last year about a teen in Redlands who had begun circulating a petition to get a skate park built there, Mickylene said. It was Priscilla who actually suggested they do it, she said.
For Debbie Delgado, seeing shy Mickylene show so much initiative has been encouraging. She said the fact that Mickylene is so passionate about this cause speaks volumes because she'll probably be away at college when the park finally gets built.
"They're doing it for everyone," she said. "At least everyone else will have somewhere to go to skate."
Moore, too, said she has been impressed with the girls' efforts.
"They're young girls and just to show how much initiative they have, I think it's great," she said.
