A proposal to ban billboards throughout Wildomar received the Planning Commission's endorsement Wednesday, a city official said.
The commission voted 3-1 to recommend the ban to the City Council, which has the final say because it requires the adoption of an ordinance amendment.
Commissioner Harv Dykstra voted against the endorsement, while Chairman Robert Devine was absent, the spokesman said.
The city already has a prohibition on putting up more billboards along Interstate 15, Grand Avenue and some sections of Clinton Keith Road. The proposed ordinance would extend that ban throughout the city.
The issue was placed before the commission after council members in November expressed interest in preventing the proliferation of billboards. Besides banning new billboards, the proposed ordinance would establish requirements for existing ones. The regulations would not apply to signs advertising businesses on the properties where they operate.
