A rose -- the "Founding Father" award -- to the family and friends of Jim Eubank, the founder of San Marcos' Restaurant Row, who died one week ago today at 88. Eubank, a former Navy SEAL and a champion swimmer, left a permanent mark on San Marcos. "Jim was one of a kind," City Manager Rick Gittings said. "He was a true entrepreneur, very innovative, very creative." Eubank set world records in the 100-, 200-, 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter swims for his age group and was a staple at the annual Oceanside Municipal Pier swim. A World War II veteran, Eubank was one of the first Navy SEALs. He is survived by his wife, Vera; sons, Jerry and Bob; and two grandchildren.

A rose -- the "Officers With Heart" award -- to the Carlsbad Police Officers Association, which has started a fund to help pay for medical care for 5-year-old Corey Lucas, who was stabbed in a Feb. 16 attack that left his great-grandfather dead and his great-grandmother seriously injured. Corey underwent surgery on his throat and jaw and spent more than a week in the hospital. He is recuperating at home. All the money collected will be used to help cover Corey's medical bills; any money left over will be used for his education. Contributions can be sent to the Corey Lucas Fund at any San Diego County branch of Washington Mutual Bank. For information, contact a local Washington Mutual Bank branch or the Carlsbad Police Officers Association at (760) 931-2165.

A rose -- the "Hearts in the Right Place" award -- to Sunshine Hair Design & Day Spa of Poway, which is offering free services for cancer patients on the second Monday of every month, beginning today. From 4 to 8 p.m., cancer patients can receive facials, massages, body scrubs, manicures, shampoos, haircuts or styles, and wig cutting or styling. Spa co-owner Tina Moretti-Plunkett said participants will need written consent from a doctor to receive the services. Information is available by calling (858) 486-1731. The spa is at 13146 Poway Road in the Poway Library Plaza shopping center.

A rose -- the "Future Farmers" award -- to Valley Center fourth-grade teacher Cathey Anderson, who has been given a statewide award for her work bringing agriculture into education. Cathey, in her 11th year as a teacher, was awarded the 2004 California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom's Outstanding Educator Award. She is a finalist for the national award, whose winner will be announced in June in Albuquerque, N.M.

A rose -- the "Come Blow Your Horn" award -- to saxophonist Richard Elliot and Steve and Heidi Levin of Escondido, for their contributions to children's charities. Elliot contributed by offering one of his saxophones to be auctioned off during the intermission of his Feb. 28 concert at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. The Levins bought the horn for $14,000, which will go to the L.R. Green Foundation for the Escondido elementary school. But that's not all. The Levins will auction off the horn again, to raise money for Kids Integrated Together, a charity for disabled children.

A rose -- the "Better Late than Never" award -- to the Oceanside City Council, for voting 4-1 to move quickly on spending at least a portion of $15 million it has collected to buy land for much needed affordable housing. The city has been accumulating the money since 1991 from developer fees. In that time, Oceanside's affordable housing ordinance has led to the construction of just two affordable houses. So, as land prices spiral up with no end in sight, it's a relief to hear the City Council has finally adopted the Affordable Housing Task Force recommendation.
