This is written in response to Mr. Richard Loomis' July 23 opinion regarding Liberty Quarry.
Mr. Loomis lives in Hemet, just as most of those in favor of the quarry live outside Temecula.
Well, I live about 1 1/2 air miles from the sight of the quarry.
I have no obstructions between my home and the mountain behind which Granite wants to build this monstrosity except a beautiful maple tree.
I do not need any scientific facts to inform me about the pollution or silica dust that might or might not be in the air.
It is common sense that there will be added risk to our community with the presence of a large quarry in our front yard.
I do not need proof that God exists ---- I know it.
God is the only one who knows whether the daily blasts from the quarry will trigger an earthquake from the many faults that exist in the area.
Only God knows whether the children practicing soccer at Pat Birdsall Sports Park or the Great Oak athletes practicing outside at the high school will inhale silica dust as the daily winds whip through the canyon sending dust and debris down on our city.
This is not a science ---- this is common sense.
I put my trust in God, not Granite Construction.
I have not opened my umbrella at all this summer because of the winds; they have become so strong that I have had to retrieve my umbrella twice from an adjoining yard.
Mr. Loomis talks about jobs.
What about all the jobs and money that will be lost when San Diego State University has to end its vital research?
There should be no question that Temecula and SDSU plan to lose a lot if Granite gets its way.
I applaud Save Our Southwest Hills for its members' diligence in fighting this goliath and the Temecula City Council for trying to maintain the dignity and beauty of our city.
We in Temecula are not opposed to the quarry ---- just the location of this one.
It is a travesty that no one at Granite cares about the real truth.
That is that only God knows what will really happen and we don’t want to take any chances.
Put the quarry somewhere else.
Mary M. Towell lives in Temecula.
