What did Palin say about DePass?

Comedian David Letterman told a joke about Sarah Palin and her family that may have crossed a line. He accepted responsibility for it and apologized publicly. Gov. Palin utilized the media to express her outrage, not only about how she found Mr. Letterman's comments to be slanderous toward her family, but also to women everywhere.

Based on the letters printed in the North County Times, many supporters of Gov. Palin expressed the same sentiments and seem mighty reluctant to let it go.

OK, so maybe I missed it, but did Gov. Palin and her supporters publicly condemn South Carolina Republican activist Rusty DePass for his infamous comments recently about First Lady Michelle Obama? These comments were all over TV news, online news sources and newspapers â€"â€" and despite the attempts of Mr. DePass to explain them as a "joke," the comments were undeniably racist.

Is Gov. Palin outraged about these truly unacceptable remarks of a fellow Republican? Are her supporters willing to publicize their disgust with the racist remarks of Mr. DePass? One wonders.

U.S. is not a 'Christian' nation

Irvin Forbing's obsession with promoting a Taliban-style religious theocracy renders him incapable of understanding a secular state that is neutral (neither supportive nor hostile) towards religion (Letters, June 20).

He can only conclude that earlier letter-writers' valid points about this nation not being founded on Judeo-Christian religion means they were founded on Islamic religion. How about: not founded on any religion?

Many of the founders were not religious. Others were, but represented differing faiths. Their compromise was to establish a secular, neutral state.

Forbing cites the Mayflower colonists who came here as English subjects to establish their religious tyranny, including slavery, burning and waterboarding of witches and public religious observances. Our founders rebelled against such tyranny to create a secular state.

Forbing's statement that the Constitution does not mention God because it is a "document of law" is absurd. The Law of Moses, Mayflower Compact, the constitutions of Iran, Saudi Arabia and most Islamic states, and those of many Latin American Catholic nations make specific statements recognizing official religious establishments, and they are "documents of law."

What Forbing really desires is a return to religious tyranny, as long as his is the favored cult.

Chargers stadium is possible in Oceanside

The possibility of the Chargers coming to Oceanside at the old drive-in is very intriguing indeed. For the project to work, the traffic issue would have to be resolved with eight lanes on Highway 76 and a rail spur from the coastline tracks (there appears to be enough land to make this feasible). Keep in mind we're talking about two preseason and eight regular season games and perhaps several playoff games.

The environmental impact report is complete, but would have to be adjusted for a stadium. The airport issue would have to be resolved. The valley's skyline would change. There is no doubt that the economy and job situation would improve with additional hotel, retail and office space to defray the stadium cost. The city's tax base would increase.

There will be the usual suspects â€"â€" the neighborhood activists â€"â€" who say no to changing Oceanside at all. It will be up to the rest of us to say maybe it's OK to have the Chargers in the San Luis Rey Valley, if it can be worked out among all of the parties.

Save the fairgrounds

At the recent San Diego County Fair board meeting, close to 300 individuals were testifying against the pending idea of the governor to sell the fairgrounds. Their arguments ranged from and included cultural, economical, social, environmental, historical and sustainable, to name a few. There were no speakers in favor. Some speakers were on the brink of tears.

Some of the adjectives used to describe the plan were: fire sale, unthinkable, unconscionable, ludicrous, irrational and dumb, all in quotes.

My telephone message to the governor, aka the Terminator, was brief and simple: "What are you thinking?!?" You may contact the governor at his San Diego office telephone, 619-525-4641, or via his Web site, http://gov.ca.gov/interact.

If anyone is interested in buying to preserve the fairgrounds, the price tag is approximately $400 million. That's million with an "M."

Your input equals vote and will count.

Still good, honest people on earth

My sincere appreciation to the Good Samaritans who found my purse at Ralphs on June 13 and turned it in to customer service. I would have liked to have had the privilege of thanking them personally, but they had already left the store.

My thanks also to the Ralphs butcher for assisting me.

These two made this elderly lady believe there still are some good and honest people like themselves on this earth, for which I am profoundly grateful.

Obama gets 'F' in all areas

Two well-written letters on June 12 responded to attempts to vilify President Ronald Reagan.

In contrast to Reagan's accomplishments, what has President Barack Obama ever done for this country? Yes, he can talk. When you finish slobbering over his delivery ability, try analyzing content. Intelligence and validity questions quickly surface. He went to Egypt, exposed his Muslim background and fabricated history. In Europe, he ignored all the United States has done around the world since World War II and dwelled on negatives. What was his purpose?

I list six areas where we are destroying the U.S. from within. My evaluation of Obama is "F" in all areas. Domestic policy, foreign relations and human conduct, Obama is the No. 1 enemy of this country. The types of people he associated with in Chicago hasn't improved with his move to Washington.

Judicial Watch lists six Democrats and four Republicans on their top 10 most corrupt political people in Washington. Obama and Hillary Clinton made the top 10 (The Judicial Watch Verdict, February 2009).

Some will deny the obvious while it will be completely over the head of others.

Why were Warriors not pictured?

Why weren't there any pictures of the Fallbrook High School graduation? It seems as though every high school was featured but Fallbrook. It is the second oldest high school in San Diego County. It would have been nice to see those proud Warrior graduates in their red and white.

Pot, meet kettle

I had some examples of Democrat "cheaters, chiselers and charlatans" to respond to Harry Titus (Letters, June 5), but Larry Iverson (Letters, June 10) stole my thunder. However, I do have a few more examples to add:

1. Chappaquiddick.

2. In 1989, Democrat Barney Frank was involved in a sex scandal â€"â€" he's still in the House, but Mark Foley, a Republican, lost his job over a sex scandal ….

3. With regards to Fannie and Freddie, it was Bush and McCain who raised the red flag in '01 and '05, and the Democrats, such as Barney Frank, who ignored said warning and who, in point of fact, were a major cause of said crisis (refer to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMnSp4qEXNM and http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&sid=aSKSoiNbnQY0&refer=columnist _hassett).

4. In the 1960 presidential election, I seem to recall something about a bunch of dead people in Chicago voting Democrat.

In short, my response to Harry Titus' June 5 statement that "Republicans are naturally drawn to cheaters, chiselers and charlatans" is this: Pot, meet kettle.

Don't foul air quality

I just read that Congress may degrade existing clean air laws while ignoring Obama's objective of more clean energy jobs. This is foolish and harmful when wind energy is cost-competitive and available now.

Votes by Bilbray, Issa show feelings

"OUSD could bring back some laid-off teachers," June 8 shows how critical federal stimulus money is during California's fiscal meltdown, especially during Bush's Great Republican Recession.

Yet radical Republicans think the federal stimulus plan is all a Marxist plot. That must be what Brian Bilbray and Darrell Issa had in mind when they voted "no" on the original stimulus bill. Their vote clearly shows they could not care less about anybody's job but their own. You can bet they are stuffing their re-election coffers with monies from political action committees and corporate America. So with "no" help from Bilbray and Issa, 28 teachers will go back to their classrooms and help our children.

Also, $68 billion in stimulus money was just returned by banks to the federal government, with taxpayers making a profit of $4.5 billion.

This must be reverse Marxism, reverse Socialism or reverse racism â€"â€" have to check that with GOP leader Rush Limbaugh for the Republicans' psycho "ism" of the week.

Republicans have nothing positive to provide after leaving us with Bush, Bilbray and Issa's $1.3 trillion deficit, so they follow their adage during the Great Republican Recession: Errors have been made, others will be blamed!

More dribble from letter writer

I appreciate Mr. William Dreu defending Mr. Chris Pulse and his followers, but it doesn't change the fact that he is spreading anti-Semitism (Letters, June 13). Mr. Dreu himself is labeling all those who support Israel as people who have their eyes closed. His letter wants all to believe that he, Mr. Pulse and his followers have the answer. I suggest that Mr. Dreu has the answers, but to the wrong questions. …

His comparison of Israel to Nazi Germany is an insult to not only the Jewish people, but to all civilized people. …

Bottom line, America supports Israel because it is the only democracy in that area because of what Israel offers to our security, and to the free world. Israel is our ally and stands with us, not against us. It is true that Israel gets support from the United States, but gives it back in defending our interests in that region. …

It is an insult for him to say that Americans are supporting racism in their relationship with Israel. Once again, that is only in his mind.

I have been reading his dribble for years, and that is all it is, dribble.

Show Mexico how to play hardball

A March 17 article in the North County Times revealed that Mexico will increase tariffs on about 90 United States products because the U.S. decided to end a pilot program allowing some Mexican trucks to transport goods into the United States ("Mexico raises tariffs on 90 U.S. products"). Another NCT brief on March 19 revealed that Mexico is imposing tariffs ranging from 10 percent to 45 percent on these products ("Mexico sets tariffs on some U.S. exports").

Well, if Mexico wants to play hardball, the U.S. should immediately return the favor by deporting all 12 million to 20 million illegal alien Mexican citizens south of the border so Mexico can provide assistance to all of these citizens. That way the U.S. can show Mexico how to play hardball.

Think that will happen? Not a chance, as few in our Congress have the backbone to play hardball with our neighbors to the south, no matter how they play hardball with us.

U.S. health care doesn't work for everyone

I've noticed of late a barrage of television sound bites by British and Canadian "sounding" persons lambasting the current national health programs in their respective countries. Well, who do you think is paying for these expensive ads? The large pharmaceutical corporations, and a lot of overpaid medical organizations who profit from our "broken" system, that's who! Heck, for a price, you can get certain unprincipled people to say anything! I guarantee that I could write to relatives and friends in the United Kingdom and Canada and get positive endorsements for these national health systems.

What is important to remember is that the United States medical system just does not work for everyone as it should! Patching together a system run by the pharmaceutical corporations and their allies in the U.S. medical profession â€"â€" not to mention the lobbyists in every hallway in Washington â€"â€" just won't fix it.

Yes, the national health services of the U.K., Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, etc., are flawed and need continued "tweaking" â€"â€" but they do provide medical care to all their people, and for a lot less than the U.S. is spending!
