Women's group to award scholarships


NORTH COUNTY ---- Contemporary Women of North County, a local women's volunteer organization, will award two $500 scholarships to graduating senior girls next month ---- one to a student at San Marcos High School and one to a student at Orange Glen High School.
The students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, a need for financial assistance, and plan to attend a local community college in the fall. Applications are available from counselors at each high school or online at http://www.cwonc.org. The deadline is April 18.
CWONC will present the scholarships to the winning students at the high schools' award nights in May. The students also will be honored at CWONC's seventh annual Mother's Day Tea scheduled for May 12 at the Wood House in San Marcos' Woodland Park. Tickets are $22 per person or $36 for two people, with discounts available for groups of six or more.

Peace scholarship available


NORTH COUNTY ---- The San Diego Veterans for Peace are offering 2007 Peace Scholarships. They will be awarded to high school seniors as one overall award of $1,000, three awards of $500 and one award of $250. Veterans attending college full time can receive a scholarship of $500. Awards are for the essay topic titled "Means and Methods to Establish World Peace Without Violence." The deadline for submission is May 15. City offers King scholarships


OCEANSIDE ---- For the 14th year, the city of Oceanside, through its Community Service Commission, will sponsor the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships, awarded to graduating high school seniors for their first year of college.
Applicants must be seniors living in Oceanside or attending Oceanside schools. More than $300,000 has been set aside for the scholarships since their inception, all from community donations. Scholarships can be used at community and four-year colleges.
Beside academic achievement and written faculty recommendations, scholarship winners should reflect King's legacy of service, integrity and commitment to excellence throughout their lives. As part of their application, candidates will be asked to write a brief essay describing how King's life has affected their own.
Completed applications are due by April 13. Winners will be notified no later than May. More information and applications are available at high school counseling offices.

Sallie Mae Fund scholarships offered


NORTH COUNTY ---- The Sallie Mae Fund sponsors several scholarship programs and supports hundreds of other college scholarships. All of the programs are based on financial need. With an estimated $3 billion in private scholarships awarded nationally each year, the fund aims to send the message that money is available to those who make the effort to apply. Since 2001, the Sallie Mae Fund has awarded $10 million in scholarships to help 4,000 students enroll in college. During the 2006-07 academic year, $2.6 million in college scholarships was awarded to more than 1,000 students nationwide. Applications are now available for the following programs: - The American Dream Scholarship, open to black Americans. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents with a minimum 2.5 grade point average and enrolled full-time at approved, accredited, undergraduate institutions. Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000. The deadline is April 15. Apply online at http://www.salliemaefund.org. - The First in My Family Scholarship for Latino Americans who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at approved, accredited institutions. Students must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000. The deadline is April 15. Apply on-line at http://www.hispanicfund.org or http://www.salliemaefund.org. - The Unmet Need Scholarship, open to families with a family adjusted gross income of $30,000 or less for the 2006 calendar year. The program is intended to supplement financial aid packages that fall more than $1,000 short of students' financial needs. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are accepted or enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at approved, accredited institutions. Students must have a 2.5 grade point average. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $3,800. The deadline is May 31. Download the application at www.salliemaefund.org. - The Sallie Mae 9/11 Education Fund, created in response to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, is open to children of those who were killed or permanently disabled as a result of the terrorist attacks and who are enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at approved, accredited institutions. Scholarship awards of up to $2,500 per applicant per school year are available and may be renewed on an annual basis, subject to satisfactory academic progress. The deadline is May 15. Tarr scholarships available


NORTH COUNTY ---- The Jonathan Tarr Foundation will provide $33,000 in scholarships to class of 2007 students graduating from select continuation, independent, charter and secondary high schools offering alternative education curriculum, including AVID, throughout San Diego County. Applications for the Windows of Opportunity Scholarships are available only through high school counselors or education directors. The deadline is April 1.
