PICKS OF THE WEEK

1. The Eastern Sierra Region is being primed with plants by the Department of Fish and Game and Tim Alpers Trout Farm this week with waters from Bishop to Bridgeport planted heavily for the holiday weekend. Even before the heavy plants lots of rainbows from 2-0 to 8-0 and brown trout to 7-0 were landed in the past week. Reservations for camping are recommended, but plenty sites should be available in the Rock Creek Lake holiday overflow camp areas. Near Bishop, Intake II and Lake Sabrina have been best, while in the Mammoth Lakes region, Lake Crowley and Lake Convict have been best. In the June Lake Loop, Gull Lake has been tops, and in the Bridgeport region, Lower Twin Lake continues to kick out scattered catches of brown trout and quality rainbows to 8-0 have also been landed. Many lakes are just now becoming ice-free, so by this weekend you could be one of the first angler to cast a bait to fish that have been under ice all winter and spring. It will be busy here, but the fishing will be good.

2. The striper bite on the California Aqueduct near Taft has slowed a lot since the action first took off early this year, but this weekend it will be one of the only waters in the region without a ton of boats, jet skis, and swimmers in it. Anglers are now averaging four to 10 fish each with the stripers running from 17 to 26 inches and weighing 1-8 to 3-0. But a couple fish to 10-0 have been landed almost daily. The number one bait by far continues to be a lug worm and night crawler combo. Best fishing is just west of the Buena Vista Golf Course along Golf Course Road (just south of state route 119 or the Taft Highway). Bob's Bucket is the only shop in southern Kern County that sells blood worms and lug worms. To get to Bob's Bait Bucket, Take the 99 freeway to the Ming Avenue exit. Take Ming east to South Chester Avenue. Go south 1/4-mile on South Chester Avenue and Bob's will be on the west side of the road. For more information on this bite, contact Bob's Bait Bucket at (661) 833-8657.

3. Catfish action has been very good at Hesperia Lake and on a weekend when most lakes will be plagued with boat traffic and swimmers this six-acre pond is a sure way to escape the hassle of Memorial Day Weekend. Best action has been for anglers fishing cut mackerel, shrimp, night crawlers and marshmallows, or mealworms and marshmallows. The bigger catfish continuing to show for anglers using long rods and heavy weights to make the long cast necessary to reach the honey hole just off the island in the middle of the lake. The six-acre lake will be planted with 4,000 pounds of catfish each week through summer, with 2,000-pounds planted each Tuesday and Friday. There is night fishing seven nights a week, and twilight fishing is available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The admission fee for each session is $12 and there is a five-fish limit for each pass purchased. For more information, call (800) 521-6332 or (760) 244-5951.

FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS

STRIPED BASS: The striper action on the California Aqueduct near Taft is slow compared to the 100-fish-a-day action last month. Now anglers who keep their bait moving are catching up to 10 fish a day, but many fish have been in the 18- to 24-inch range. Lake Silverwood striper action has been fair to good on striped bass weighing 1-0 to 5-0 for weekday anglers fishing from the boat dock with cut anchovies. Boat anglers are taking fair numbers of fish averaging 2-0 to 7-0 on cut anchovies or night crawlers when boat traffic isn't to heavy. On the Colorado River, Lake Mojave is wide open with many anglers reporting 100 fish days on cut baits. While most are under a pound, the bite is excellent. Lake Mead is also good and the fish are from 2-0 to 6-0 here and showing all over the lake on cut baits and live shad. Lake Havaus is fair with flurries of good action in 30 to 60 feet of water on cut baits.

TROUT: Green Valley Lake kicked off trout season with good action on Friday, but fishing was slow through the weekend. Boat anglers fishing the lakes aerator systems had fair action all weekend on trout ranging from 1-0 to 5-1. Power Bait, mini-jigs, Lip Ripperz, and midge-pattern flies were the best baits. Big Bear Lake trout action has varied from fair to excellent depending on location and pressure. Trout from 2-8 to 6-0 have been showing for shore anglers and trollers. Trollers using two to four colors of leadcore line with Rapalas, Needlefish, or Dick Nite Spoons have had the best action. Shore anglers continue to do best on Power Bait or night crawlers fished under a slip-bobber with the bobber stop set 10 to 25 feet up the two-pound line, or on the bottom with a three-foot leader. At Diamond Valley Reservoir trout are holding from 30 to 60 feet deep and are feeding and holding to huge schools of shad. Trollers using leadcore line and Rapalas, Kastmasters, Dick Nite Spoons, or Needlefish have taken limits of hold-over trout ranging from 2-0 to 8-0. Boat anglers trolling six to 11 colors of leadcore line have had the best action. In the Eastern Sierra near Bishop, Intake II continues to be excellent since all DFG and Alpers Trout stockings have been stocked either here or in Bishop creek, due to all other lakes in the region being frozen until this past week. The Owens River is high and muddy. The road to South Lake is closed due to water flowing across the road and icing up. The road to North Lake is still closed, but some anglers are hiking in and catching fish to 6-0 from the open water at the inlet. Sabrina Lake is ice-free now and there is pretty good action. Crowley Lake continues to be good on rainbows to 5-4 for boat anglers trolling Needlefish or Rapalas on three to four colors of leadcore. Bait anglers have had the best action on inflated night crawlers or Power Bait. Convict Lake continues to kick out limits of trout to 7-0 on Power Bait, Thomas Buoyants, mini-jigs, or trout worms. The June Lake Loop continues to produce multiple species of trout with brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout showing from a number of waters. Grant Lake has been producing all three types of trout to 4-0 on a variety of baits and lures. Trollers are doing best on Kastmasters, Needlefish, or Rapalas fished on three to seven colors of leadcore. June Lake trout action has been fair to good on slow-trolled Thomas Buoyants, drifted mini-jigs, or Rapalas. There has also been fair to good action on trout to 5-4 on Gull Lake, Silver Lake, and Rush Creek. In Bridgeport, the rivers are all pretty high with runoff, but both Twin Lakes and Bridgeport Reservoir are very good. Lower Twin is producing browns each week in the 4-0 or better range.

PANFISH: Bluegill have swarmed onto beds at San Vicente Lake near San Diego, and anglers able to locate bedded fish have had excellent action on bluegill to 2-0. Most fish are holding in five to 15 feet of water and are hitting crickets, mini-jigs, mealworms, or night crawler pieces. At Lake Murray, the bite has been wide open on bluegill to 1-8 on crickets, mini jigs, or meal worms, and this past week over 1,000 fish were checked in. Lower Otay also started pumping out big numbers of crappie and bluegill to 2-0. Best baits have been night crawlers or small live shiners. Redear and crappie are showing at Lake Casitas with both species giving up fish to 2-0. Crappie are holding in 15 to 30-feet of water and have been hitting small live shiners, small crankbaits, or drifted mini-jigs. Redear to 2-4 have been landed in 10 to 20 feet of water on night crawlers. Diamond Valley Lake also has a good bluegill bite in 10 to 20 feet of water with fish to 1-0 and above reported. The panfish bite at Lake Lopez on the Central Coast exploded and very good action has been reported on bluegill to 2-0, redear to 2-2, and crappie to 2-8. Best baits have been live minnows, mini-jigs, or night crawler pieces for the bluegill and redear. Many limits have been reported by boat anglers in just a few hours.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Lake Perris continues to pump out good numbers of fish from 1-0 to 8-0 along the east end, the island, and the marina points. Pleasure boat traffic and heavy lake usage slowed fishing over the weekend. Many weekday anglers are reporting 20 to 30 fish days on drop-shotted or split-shotted plastics, topwater plugs, jerkbaits, or crankbaits. Most fish are being taken in seven to 20-feet of water. Bass fishing was good at Lake Silverwood during the week, but also slowed over the weekend due to heavy boat usage on the lake. Most bass have moved from nests in two to 10 feet of water and are now holding in 10 to 25 feet of water. Best action has been on drop-shotted or Texas-rigged plastic worms, jerkbaits, crankbaits, or night crawlers. Top areas have been Outhouse Cove, Miller Canyon, and Cleghorn Canyon. Diamond Valley Reservoir continues to produce fair to good bass action on fish to 7-8 on swimbaits, spinnerbaits, plastic worms, jerkbaits, and crawdads. Most fish are holding in 10 to 20-feet of water.

CATFISH: The twice a week catfish plants at Hesperia Lake continue to keep action fair to very good with most anglers getting limits of fish averaging 3-0 on mackerel or the M&M combo (marshmallow and meal worms). Best action on big fish continues to be for anglers able to make the long cast close to the island in the center of the lake. Santa Ana River Lakes will kick off it official catfish season on Thursday, and the lake was closed Wednesday for a massive stocking of catfish with fish over 10-0 scheduled to be stocked. There will also be 24-hour fishing passes available on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. At Lake Sutherland near San Diego, quality catches of catfish showed again for a second week on mackerel.
