PICKS OF THE WEEK
1. The largemouth bass bite at Lake Perris is red hot on fish averaging 1-0 to 4-0, and many quality fish from 7-0 to 13-0 were landed in the past last week. Best action has been in the east end in three to 15 feet of water on drop-shotted four or six-inch plastic worms in purple or green. However, the quality bass are showing on seven to nine-inch Texas-rigged plastic worms in 15 to 20 feet of water. There has also been an excellent jerkbait bite and a budding topwater bite that should get better as the weather warms. Of perhaps even bigger news is the first significant crappie bite here. There have been consistent reports of 2-0 crappie taking mini-jigs along the east end in 15 feet of water. These large crappie are holding to cover in dense schools, so anglers who keep on the move until they find a school are scoring up to 20 of these quality fish each. A few big bluegill have also been taken by shore anglers in 15 feet of water from the marina on crickets or mealworms, but few fish have moved shallow to spawn yet. After a slow spring, Perris is finally breaking wide open. For an update on these bites, contact the marina at (951) 657-2179.
2. This pick is a gamble, but Lake Pyramid just reopened after being closed for a few months due to an oil spill. Without any announcement from the Forest Service, the lake opened Sunday to high, murky water levels, and only fair action was reported on stripers to 2-0 on cut anchovies. But water clarity has improved daily and the striper bite should break wide open. Best action has been for boat anglers drifting cut anchovies in 25 to 50 feet of water near the marina or the main cove. In addition to the striper bite, there has been some good action on largemouth bass to 5-0. Most bass have been taken on spinnerbaits, crankbaits, or white grubs fished along the rocky walls down in the 25-foot depths. There are no concessions, boat rentals, bait sales, gas, or ice available so make sure to bring everything needed for a day on the water.
3. The striper bite on the California Aqueduct near Taft slowed last week due to decreased flows, but most anglers still took home their two-fish limits. Flows are always fluctuating in the section of aqueduct, but they came back up early this week and the stripers have piled back into the Taft to Tupman area in excellent numbers. Most stripers are running 1-0 to 3-0, but a couple fish to 10-0 or better are landed almost daily. The number one bait by far continues to be a lug worm and night crawler combo. Best fishing is again just west of the Buena Vista Golf Course along Golf Course Road (just south of state route 119, also called the Taft Highway). Bob's Bucket is the only shop in southern Kern County that sells blood worms and lug worms. To get to Bob's Bait Bucket, take the 99 freeway to the Ming Avenue exit. Take Ming east to South Chester Avenue. Go south a quarter-mile on South Chester Avenue and Bob's will be on the west side of the road. For more information on this bite, contact Bob's Bait Bucket at (661) 833-8657.
FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS
STRIPED BASS: The excellent striper fishing along the California Aqueduct near Taft slowed over the weekend due to a decrease in flows and heavy fishing pressure near the flood gates. Anglers are still catching and releasing up to 70 fish a day on lug worms and night crawlers, while anglers fishing cut anchovies, white Gitzits, or Rat-L-Traps have been averaging 15 to 30 fish each. Most fish are averaging from 1-0 to 3-0, and fish to 11-0 were landed last week. Castaic striper action is fair and improving on cut anchovies fished in 80 to 100 feet of water on the bottom in the Fish Arm at the buoy line. Trollers are scoring quality fish from 6-8 to 12-0 on Bomber jerkbaits fished on five colors of leadcore. Lake Silverwood has a good striper bite for anglers fishing off the boat dock. Fish have been running from 1-0 to 5-0 and the best action has been reported on cut anchovies. Boat anglers are scoring some fish on drifted anchovies from Quarry Cove. On the Colorado River, Lake Mead has been pumping out good numbers of striped bass to 6-0 for anglers fishing cut anchovies in 20 to 40 feet of water in Overton Arm.
TROUT: This weekend Big Bear Lake will be the site of the annual Jim Hall Memorial May Trout Classic, and the lake will receive heavy plants of trophy trout to 12-0. Overall fishing has been excellent with trollers getting limits of fish averaging 2-0 on Rapalas, Needlefish, or Dick Nite Spoons. Bait anglers are using Power Bait or night crawlers fished under a slip-bobber with a 15-foot leader or on the bottom with an egg weight and a three-foot leader. Trout fishing at Lake Gregory has stayed hot on fish to 5-0 for boat anglers trolling lures or for float tube anglers fishing mini-jigs or trout worms. Best action has been near the fountains, the boat dock, or the baseball diamond. The Green Valley Lake opener was moved to May 20, and the lake will receive a Whitewater trout plant just prior to the opening. In the Eastern Sierra, Intake II in the Bishop Creek drainage and Lake Crowley just north of Bishop continue to be the top producers with fish to 7-2 showing from both waters on inflated night crawlers, Power Bait, or mini-jigs. At Crowley, trolling a variety of small lures behind two to three colors of leadcore has also been an easy way to a limit of fish. At Convict Lake, the trout bite continues to be good and fish to 7-1 were landed on Power Bait or Thomas Buoyants. In the Bridgeport region, Upper and Lower Twin Lakes continue to have good action on rainbow trout to 5-0 on Power Bait, Rapalas, or Power Bait and night crawler combos. Bridgeport Reservoir has been fair for shore anglers and good for boat anglers fishing inflated night crawlers, Power Bait, or Zeke's Sierra Gold. Fishing has been best for boat anglers, but shore fishermen are also getting some limits of fish.
PANFISH: At Lake Cuyamaca east of San Diego, crappie have flooded the shallows all over the lake and wide-open fishing has been reported on 1/80 and 1/64-ounce white mini-jigs drifted under a bobber. Most fish are suspended in 10 to 15 feet of water next to any type of structure. Fish are averaging less than 1-0 but many 25 fish limits have been landed in just a few hours. Catch rates on crappie went up at Lake Henshaw and good fishing was reported on fish to 1-8. Best bait has been live minnows, but mini-jigs tipped with a Berkley Crappie Nibblet drifted under a bobber have also been taking fish. Some anglers are catching and releasing up to 75 fish a day. A big surprise this week was the excellent crappie bite that erupted at Lake Perris where fish to 2-0 are showing on small jigs in flooded brush in three to 15 feet of water.
LARGEMOUTH BASS: Lake Perris is wide-open along the east end, the island, the dam, and the marina points on drop-shotted plastics or Texas-rigged plastic worms. Most fish are averaging 1-0 to 2-0, but many quality fish from 8-0 to 13-4 were taken. The water is really clear so for fast action lighter line is recommended. Largemouth bass action has been good at Diamond Valley Lake and fish to 10-0 continue to show weekly. Best action has been on Senkos, drop-shotted plastics, or reaction baits. Other decent bets include Lake Casitas, Santa Margarita on the Central Coast, and all of the lower Colorado River backwaters.
CATFISH: The catfish bite continues to be very good at Hesperia Lake where weekly plants have made for fair to good action on fish to 25-0. Most anglers are getting from three to five fish averaging 3-0 on mackerel or the M&M combo (marshmallow and meal worms). Best action on big fish continues to be for anglers able to make the long cast close to the island in the center of the lake. Irvine Lake's catfish bite is heating up for boat anglers targeting deeper water near the dam or mid-lake on night crawlers or mackerel. Santa Ana River Lakes and Corona Lake are also starting to produce some cats. The lower Colorado River is also a good bet with the warmer weather. Top areas are from Parker Dam downstream to the Mexico border. More big flatheads have been reported in the past week, with several fish over 20-0 caught.
SAN DIEGO AREA LAKES
BARRETT: This past week 196 anglers caught and released 937 bass for just under a five fish per rod average. Fishing has been fair with some flurries of very good action.
