SAN DIEGO - Petco Park will be used officially for the first time by San Diego Padres players Wednesday when "voluntary workouts" will begin.
"All players on San Diego's 40-man roster can attend the workouts, which will be staffed by Padres coaches," team officials announced today. "Player attendance at all workouts is voluntary."
Voluntary workouts will start at 11 a.m., and then be held at that same time Friday and then every Monday, Wednesday and Friday after that until Feb. 15 before spring training gets underway in Peoria, Ariz.
Fans should not get too excited about the new schedule at Petco Park. The voluntary workouts will be open only to the media and not to the public, according to the team.
This will be the inaugural season for Petco Park which has just been constructed near the San Diego Convention Center. The Padres have been playing their home games at Qualcomm Stadium.
