LAKE ELSINORE -- The Southwestern League Finals provide one final chance for the Valley's swimmers. For athletes who haven't yet done so, there is a last opportunity to qualify for the CIF-Southern Section Division III meet, and for those who have already qualified, they are a final tune-up before the meet.

Murrieta Valley had by far the most success at the meet at Temescal Canyon on Thursday, but all the coaches left pleased with what their teams accomplished. The Nighthawks boys and girls both dominated the meet, winning all six relays and finishing first in all but one event on both the boys and girls sides.

"I was totally thrilled," Murrieta coach Genevieve Barrow said. "They are coming together at the right time. It was awesome."

The Nighthawks girls set a league record in the 200-yard medley relay. Bridget Barrow, Brittany McGrorty, Lauren Mitchell and Chelsea Klinger notched a time of 2 minutes, 34.5 seconds. The Nighthawks boys also set a league record in the 200-medley relay. Brendan Barrow, Ian Deans, Frankie Gotte and Eric Starkweather swam the event in 1:43.68, which was a 1 1/2 second improvement.

The Nighthawks' two 200-freestyle relay teams also improved their times significantly. The girls improved by almost 2 seconds to 1:43.81, and the boys improved a half-second to 1:30.59.

Bridget Barrow and McGrorty won two individual events. Bridget Barrow won the 200-individual medley in 2:14.68 and the 100 backstroke in 1:01.09, and McGrorty won the 200 free in 1:56.98 -- a personal best -- and the 100 butterfly in 1:00.68.

Boyle and Buddy Olds also won two individual events. Boyle won the 100 back in a personal best 52.65 and the 200 free in 1:43.90. Olds set personal bests while winning the 100 free in 49.13 and the 50 free in 22.25.

"They're ready for CIF," coach Barrow said.

Two Chaparral girls achieved CIF consideration times in events they hadn't qualified for before. Krystina Gonzales got consideration times in the 200 free and the 500 free, and Rachel Fowler earned one in the 100 breast.

The Puma' Vince Tortora, who won the 100 butterfly in 53.46, and Aryanna Wetteland, who won the 100 breast in 1:11.46, were the only non-Murrieta swimmers to win events.

Chaparral coach Jamie Trembly said her team is ready for the CIF meet.

"I think they're going to do well," she said.

The highlights for Temecula Valley came from Eric Mallinger, who improved his qualifying time by almost nine seconds and got a CIF consideration time in the 200 free, and Josh Osborn, who previously had a consideration time in the 500 free but got an automatic time on Wednesday. Also, the Temecula boys 200 free relay team improved its previous best by 1 1/2 seconds, swimming a 1:37.06.

The Temescal Canyon girls 200-medley relay team improved its previous best by four seconds, and the Titans' 200 free relay team shaved 2 seconds off its previous best.
