PHOENIX -- The Padres are playing a series this week about 30 miles from their spring training complex in Peoria, Ariz., but general manager Kevin Towers has no intention of paying a visit to suspended shortstop Matt Bush.
Towers hasn't spoken with Bush since the No. 1 overall draft pick was arrested June 20 at a Peoria bar. Bush allegedly bit a bouncer who was trying to evict he and his older brother, Jeremy Bush.
"I'm probably too angry to talk to him," Towers said.
This week, though, Towers plans to initiate the first in-depth discussions with Jeff Moorad, Bush's agent. The Padres have not ruled out attempting to void Bush's $3.15 million signing bonus.
Bush, an 18-year-old graduate of Mission Bay High, would be playing in the Arizona Rookie League, but the Padres suspended him indefinitely in the wake of his arrest. He remains in Peoria doing little but lifting weights and, as Towers says, "watching his teammates play, which has to be pretty tough."
Bush faces three misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, trespassing and minor in possession of alcohol but had a more serious felony assault charge dropped. He is scheduled for arraignment on July 6. Towers declined to speculate on how the legal outcome might affect the Padres' course of action.
"The quicker we can put this to rest one way or the other, the better," Towers said. "We made sure we got a physical, and we've been doing some investigating of his character and trying to find out more about him. We're going to sit down and decide as an organization whether we have grounds to do certain things or not.
"You have to have all the information first before you decide if you have a case."
Towers wasn't sure how long it would take to resolve Bush's situation, although based on his characterization of the agents' position, there could be a protracted, messy battle on the horizon.
"I think they think that they've had a good sit-down talk with him, and he should be out there playing, and 'What's the holdup?' " Towers said. "We want to make darn sure this ain't going to happen again because $3 million is a lot of money. It's not that simple. They want it to be very simple."
Diamondbacks dump?
The Padres just left Seattle, where they faced a Mariners team that essentially threw in the towel on the season by trading ace pitcher Freddy Garcia. Now they meet another club that might be close to waving the white flag.
Towers has let it be known he is interested in talking trade with Arizona, which lost its franchise-worst 10th consecutive game Monday night. One player who intrigues the Padres is center fielder Steve Finley, who hit his 19th home run and also smacked a double high off the center-field wall Monday.
Finley, now 39 years old, enjoyed his time in San Diego, where he played from 1995-98. He carries a hefty salary of $7 million but is eligible for free agency after the season. Among the players the Padres could dangle in a trade are pitcher Dennis Tankersley and outfielder Xavier Nady.
"He was a very popular player in San Diego, he's a great center fielder, we have a very big outfield, we've got a guy who would probably want to play in San Diego," Towers said. "I don't know if (anything) will happen. If they decide to deal him, I'd imagine we'd get a call, but I haven't gotten it."
