PICKS OF THE WEEK

1. The largemouth bass bite at Lake Perris continues to be excellent on fish from 2-0 to 4-0, and many quality fish from 5-0 to 11-0 were landed again this week. Best action has been along the east end in three to 15 feet of water on drop-shotted four- or six-inch plastic worms in purple or green. However, the quality bass continue to show on bigger seven- to nine-inch, Texas-rigged plastic worms in 15 to 20 feet of water. The lake will receive a DFG trout plant this week so a big trout swimbait would also be a wise choice for a big fish. On top of the excellent bass fishing, crappie to 2-0 continue to hammer mini-jigs or small crankbaits in 15 feet of water in the east end. Redear from 1-8 to 2-6 have also taken up residency along the east end and very good fishing has been reported on worms, mini-jigs, or mealworms. Big bluegill to 2-8 are also holding to spawning beds in 10 to 15 feet of water around the marina, the east end, the island, and Rock Climber's Cove. These quality fish are nailing crickets, mini-jigs, or meal worms fished over their spawning beds. For an update on these bites, contact the marina at (951) 657-2179.

2. Green Valley Lake will officially kick off its trout season on Friday, and the lake will be primed this week with trout plants from the DFG and Whitewater Trout Farm. Trout to 8-0 are scheduled to be planted by Whitewater and limits of trout should be easy through the weekend. Boat rentals are available, and the lake will be stocked once a week with trout from Whitewater Trout Farms all summer. This is a private lake and the fee to fish is $10. A California fishing license is required. The statewide five-fish limit on trout applies, and a two-pole stamp for your fishing license is required if a second rod is used.

3. Catfish action has been good to very good at Hesperia Lake for anglers fishing cut mackerel, shrimp, night crawler and marshmallow combo, or the mealworm and marshmallow combo. Limits of catfish averaging 1-8 to 5-0 have been taken in as little as an hour and big fish to 44-0 were landed last week. The bigger catfish continue to show for anglers using long rods and heavy weights to make the long cast necessary to reach the honey hole just off the island in the middle of the lake. The six-acre lake will be planted with 4,000 pounds of catfish each week through summer, with 2,000 pounds planted each Tuesday and Friday. There is night fishing seven nights a week, and twilight fishing is available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The admission fee for each session is $12 and there is a five-fish limit for each pass purchased.

FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS

STRIPED BASS: Striper fishing continues to be very good in the California Aqueduct near Taft. Catch rates are down to about 25 to 50 fish per person, but more and more fish from 18 inches (minimum length for legal-sized fish) to 25 inches are being landed than any time this season. Lug Worm (or blood worm) and night crawler combos, cut anchovies, white Gitzits, or Rat-L-Traps have been best. Lake Silverwood striper action has been fair to good for anglers fishing off the boat dock (which is only allowed on weekdays). Fish have been averaging from 1-0 to 5-0, and the best action has been on cut anchovies or night crawlers. Boat anglers are taking stripers on drifted anchovies from Outhouse Cove. Lake Castaic stripers continue to hang in 80 to 100 feet of water near or on the bottom in the fish arm at the buoy line. Best baits have been cut anchovies, cut sardines, or bloodworms. A few quality fish from 12-8 to 16-0 have been taken by boat anglers trolling Bomber jerkbaits or while casting trout swimbaits. Along the Colorado River, fishing is fair to good in Lake Mead, the main river near Palo Verde, and Martinez Lake. However, the bite at Lake Mohave has been the best on the whole river. There's a very good bite at mile markers 23 and 24 on 1-0 to 3-4 class fish on cut anchovies.

TROUT: Big Bear Lake received heavy fishing pressure over the weekend, with a sold-out field of participants competing in the May Trout Classic. Fishing was excellent and lots of trout from 2-8 to 6-0 were landed. Most trollers were getting limits of fish averaging 2-8 on Rapalas, Needlefish, or Dick Nite Spoons fished behind two to three colors of leadcore line. Bait anglers were using Power Bait or night crawlers fished under a slip-bobber on two-pound line or on the bottom with a three-foot leader. In the Eastern Sierra near Bishop, Intake II continues to be one of the only ice-free waters in the area and has been producing limits of trout to 7-0 on mini-jigs, Thomas Buoyants, or Power Bait. Crowley Lake continues to be very good on rainbows to 6-8 for boat anglers trolling Needlefish or Rapalas on the surface to four colors deep and for bait anglers fishing McGee Bay in eight feet of water. At Convict Lake, trout fishing has been good with a number of quality fish from 4-0 to 8-6 landed. Top baits have been Power Bait, Thomas Buoyants, mini-jigs, or trout worms. The June Lake Loop continues to have very good action on brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. Both Grant and June Lake are producing cutthroat trout to 3-4 on slow-trolled Thomas Buoyants, drifted mini-jigs, or Rapalas. In Bridgeport, Lower Twin Lake kicked out a 16-5 brown trout last week on a trolled Rapala. This is the biggest brown trout taken from this region in over a decade, but the action has been good on browns and rainbows to 2-0 with a fair number of kicker fish to 5-0. Santa Ana River Lakes continues to produce a lot of trout thanks to heavy weekly plants. There were a dozen rainbows over 10 pounds reported, including a 19I-pounder. Corona Lake and Irvine Lake also both still seeing fair trout action with most of the rainbows showing from deeper water. On Friday, Green Valley Lake will officially open for trout fishing, and the lake will receive plants by both the DFG and Whitewater Trout Farms.

PANFISH: Lake Perris panfish action is wide-open on a variety of species. Redear to 2-8, crappie to 2-4 and bluegill to 2-6 have been landed in the past week. Crappie and redear are showing from the east end. Redear are in three to 10 feet of water, hitting mini-jigs, mealworms, or night crawler pieces. Crappie are holding in deeper water up to 20 feet hitting mini-jigs, small crankbaits, or quarter-ounce Rat-L-Traps. Big Florida-strain bluegill are on nests and are holding in four to 10 feet of water all around the lake. Best baits are crickets, mealworms, or mini-jigs. Bluegill action at Lake Murray rebounded this week and over 500 fish were checked in. The best action has been on crickets, meal worms, worms, or mini-jigs on fish to 1-8. El Capitan was hammered with pleasure boat traffic last weekend, but that couldn't stop the big increase of bluegill taken over the weekend by anglers fishing live minnows, mini-jigs, crickets, or mealworms.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Lake Perris bass fishing continues to be excellent along the east end, the island, the dam, and the marina points. Many anglers reported 10 to 30 fish days over the weekend on fish averaging 1-0 to 3-0. Top baits are drop-shotted or split-shotted plastics. Most fish are being taken in three to 10 feet of water. Most anglers are getting from three to five fish averaging 3-0 on mackerel or the M&M combo (marshmallow and meal worms). Best action on big fish continues to be for anglers able to make the long cast close to the island in the center of the lake. The lower Colorado River is also a good bet with the warmer weather. Top areas are from Parker Dam downstream to the Mexico border. More big flatheads have been reported in the past week, with several fish over 20-0 caught. The 27 anglers aboard the Legend, Seaforth Sportfishing in San Diego, returned Sunday from a 1H-day trip with 38 albacore from 15-0 to 30-0 and 135 yellowtail from 6-0 to 12-0. The eight anglers aboard the Top Gun 80, H & M Landing in San Diego, landed three albacore and one yellowtail on an overnight trip that fished Sunday.

YELLOWTAIL: There has been lots of yellowtail seen along the coast from Dana Point to the La Jolla Kelp Beds, and at offshore islands, including the Coronado Islands, Santa Barbara Island, San Clemente Island, and Catalina Island. Lots of yellowtail were seen at Catalina Island on Tuesday, but they are still not biting. The 28 anglers aboard the El Dorado, Long Beach Sportfishing in Long Beach, landed 10 yellowtail, 168 rockfish, 23 sheephead, 12 calico bass, and 10 lingcod on an overnight trip on Saturday. On Monday, six anglers aboard the Dreamer, Pierpoint Sportfishing in Long Beach, fished an overnight trip at Catalina Island and landed three yellowtail, one white seabass, and 20 calico bass. There were four anglers aboard the Phantom, Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach, that fished an overnight trip at Catalina Island on Sunday and they landed six yellowtail, 29 rockfish, and two sheephead. Boat pressure and poor weather are the only factors holding back the tons of yellowtail seen around the Coronado Islands from biting. With improved weather and a break in pressure during the week may make this bite red-hot. On Sunday, the 35 anglers aboard the New Lo-An, landed eight yellowtail out of 13 hook-ups, and reported seeing breaking fish all around the Islands.

WHITE SEA BASS: The bite at the Catalina Island has been nonexistent, but many boats at the island on Tuesday reported seeing huge numbers of white sea bass cruising around. The eight anglers aboard the Phantom, Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach, fished a charter at Catalina Island on Tuesday and reported seeing many white seabass and yellowtail breezing tight to the island. Those anglers landed three white sea bass from 35-0 to 50-0 and one yellowtail weighing 35-0, along with 45 calico bass, and six sheephead.

ROCKFISH: Excellent action continues from San Diego to Central California, and the good rockfish action continues to save many overnight trips that blanked on the yellowtail at San Clemente Island, Catalina Island, and Santa Barbara Island. The bite is on a mixed bag of rockfish including red snapper, lingcod, sheephead, and bocaccio. The 19 anglers aboard the Sea Angler, 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro, landed 65 rockfish, and 62 red snapper on a three-quarter-day trip on Saturday. Also on Saturday, the 52 anglers aboard the Speed Twin, Channel Island Sportfishing in Oxnard, fished a half-day trip and landed 310 rockfish and 65 red snapper. On Tuesday, the 18 anglers aboard the City of Long Beach, Long Beach Marina in Long Beach, scored 110 rockfish, and eight bocaccio on a half-day trip.

BONITO: Bonito continue to show in good numbers around Catalina Island and saved many yellowtail trips when the forkies didn't bite. The 12 anglers aboard the Aggressor, Newport Landing in Balboa Beach, scored 48 bonito, seven calico bass, one sheephead, one rockfish, and one yellowtail on a three-quarter-day trip on Saturday. The 13 anglers aboard the Freelance, Davey's Locker in Balboa Beach, landed 54 bonito, 52 calico bass, one yellowtail, and one barracuda, on a three-quarter-day trip on Monday.

CALICO BASS: Calico bass fishing is wide-open along the coast and at all the local islands. Most fish are averaging from 1-8 to 3-0 and fish to 8-0 have been landed at Catalina Island. The 14 anglers aboard the Freelance, Davey's Locker in Balboa Beach, landed 51 calico bass, 33 bonito, 25 perch, two barracuda, and one sheephead on Tuesday. There were 12 anglers aboard the Spitfire, Redondo Sportfishing in Redondo Beach, who landed 63 calico bass and 15 bonito on a three-quarter-day trip on Tuesday.
