PEORIA, Ariz. -- Greg Maddux barely broke a sweat in his first outing of the 2008 campaign on Tuesday.

The right-hander needed only 18 pitches -- 16 of which were strikes -- to complete a perfect two innings in a 9-6 win over San Francisco at Peoria Stadium.

Following the outing, however, Maddux said he wasn't nearly as sharp as he may have appeared to the average fan. Calling himself effectively wild, Maddux said his location was off and he was fortunate to get away with it.

"I was a little wild obviously," Maddux said. "I know it don't look like it. But (I was) trying to go down and away and going up and in. I was kind of wild in the strike zone. I'm glad it was in spring training rather than in the season because the hitters aren't quite right yet."

One thing Maddux discussed was that on some occasions a pitcher's adrenaline can make him not quite right. But that didn't happen on Tuesday.

"I didn't rush it," Maddux said. "It's really easy to rush. … The more you see the mound the better you feel."

Afro on display

Kyle Blanks has spent most of camp wearing cornrows and a do-rag. So when manager Bud Black saw a picture of Blanks' letting his hair down he asked to see it live.

On Tuesday morning, Blanks accommodated his manager with his afro in all its glory complete with a 1970s era leisure suit. The 6-foot-6, 270-pound first baseman said he spent several days piecing together an outfit that was well received.

Blanks dressed up as part of his two presentations -- one on baseball players from New Mexico and the other on Tony Clark's basketball career.

"Its things that will not embarrass you," Blanks said of the team-building exercise. "It's something that's good for everyone. It allows you to learn about the other people around you whether you're going to be playing with them for that year or not. It's always nice to know who you're playing with."

Crazy Crabbe

The super utility man is turning some heads. Rule 5 draftee Callix Crabbe has played most of the infield positions and added right field to the mix on Monday when he played there in a B game. Thus far, Black likes what he's seeing from Crabbe, who is getting a lot of time in the outfield during the team's pregame workouts.

"With Callix, his versatility helps him," Black said. "He's playing with a lot of confidence defensively right now."

The 25-year-old is also 5-for-13 (.385) at the plate through five games played.
