After Gonzalez ties it, rookie Durango beats D'backs with his feet
SAN DIEGO ---- Padres manager Bud Black has spent much of the last two seasons observing prospects and also-rans, but Wednesday afternoon might have topped them all.
Fielding a lineup missing four regular position players and starting a pitcher who was working on a pitch count, Black all but guaranteed himself a chance to evaluate nearly every healthy soul on the Padres' 40-man roster. And then the Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks went to extra innings.
Combining the efforts of a few familiar faces with a breakout performance from an unknown one, the Padres rallied for a 6-5 win in 10 innings before 14,377 at Petco Park.
Adrian Gonzalez lifted the Padres with a two-run, pinch-hit home run ---- the first of his career ---- with two outs in the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-5. The her in the 10th was fleet rookie Luis Durango, who led off with his third infield hit in five plate appearances and stole second base before motoring around to score on Everth Cabrera's single.
"Floating is the best word you can use," outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. said of Durango's speed. "Two of (the hits), I don't know if he even bunted and the last one was ridiculous. ... We did a really good job, and that wasn't our best game. It's nice to win games like that."
Black is discovering that it's nice to have this much speed on the roster. He estimated that Durango's three hits ---- replays showed that he was denied a fourth infield hit in the fourth inning when he was incorrectly ruled out by umpire Bob Davidson ---- traveled a grand total of 140 feet. But distance didn't matter.
The Panama-born outfielder's final hit, an 80-foot slow roller that wound up wide of first base, went just far enough to allow Durango to outrace reliever Yusmeiro Petit to the bag after he caught an underhand toss from first baseman Brandon Allen. One out later, Durango easily swiped second base after catcher Miguel Montero had trouble receiving Petit's pitch.
That set up Cabrera's game-winner, a seeing-eye hit that scooted past Allen and Augie Ojeda into shallow right field. Justin Upton retrieved the ball quickly and fired home, but Durango raced past Montero's tag, made a U-turn and dove safely into the plate.
"That was fun to watch," said Gonzalez, who hit a 97-mph fastball from Esmerling Vasquez in the ninth inning for his 38th home run. "That was pretty impressive."
Perhaps equally as interesting was the chorus line of pitchers trotted out by Black. With starter Edward Mujica on a limit of 70-80 pitches, Black knew his bullpen would be tested. After he pulled Mujica with two outs in the fifth inning, Black turned to, in order, Ryan Webb, Aaron Poreda, Sean Gallagher, Adam Russell, Joe Thatcher, Luis Perdomo, Cesar Ramos and Heath Bell to record the game's final 16 outs.
Only Perdomo and Bell have spent the entire season in the major leagues, and Ramos ---- a first-round supplemental pick in 2005 ---- was making his major league debut. Ramos allowed two hits in his one inning but induced a flyout by Allen with runners on second and third.
Freshly shaven and looking to rebound, Bell (6-4) quickly retired the first two batters he faced in the 10th inning before walking center fielder Chris Young. But catcher Henry Blanco ---- who had two hits, two walks and threw out two baserunners ---- caught Young on an attempted steal to end the threat.
"If you added up the service time of the nine pitchers we threw, Heath had the most," Black said. "We're throwing some guys in there and seeing what they can do."
Durango, Cabrera and Gwynn showed how their quickness can impact a game. The trio went 7-for-11 with two walks and two RBIs and combined for all five of the Padres' infield hits. They also scored four of the Padres' six runs.
"You're not up here if you can't contribute," said Gwynn, who was 1-for-1 with a sacrifice fly, sacrifice bunt and two walks. "They wouldn't be here if they couldn't."
