PADRES NOTES: Young on way to DL, but Latos won't get call

SAN DIEGO -- Pitcher Chris Young is likely headed to the 15-day disabled list, as the Padres expect him to miss his next two starts.

But the Padres won't promote top pitching prospect Mat Latos to fill one of their two rotation vacancies for Friday or Saturday. A team source said those two starts will likely go to Walter Silva and Wade LeBlanc, both of whom are already on the 40-man roster.

The thinking is that Latos -- who is 6-1 with a 0.84 ERA and could be promoted to the majors later this season -- would be required to throw too many innings with the Padres. He already has thrown 53 1/3 innings this season between Double-A San Antonio and Single-A Fort Wayne, and general manager Kevin Towers would like him to max out between 100-125 innings.

"He's got less than 150 innings in his professional career," Towers said. "At some point, there's a chance he can come up here. But the most he's thrown professionally is 50-60 innings. If he were to come up here and pitch every fifth day, he'd end up with 150-160 innings. If you start tripling their innings, you put 'em in danger and bad things can happen."

Manager Bud Black said the Padres wanted to monitor Young, who is battling right shoulder inflammation, after his last start Sunday.

"We wanted to give it at least three days to see how it resolved," Black said.

The Padres also could turn to Josh Banks, who was promoted Tuesday and made 14 starts last season. But Banks will pitch as a long reliever for now.

Hairston on the mend

Outfielder Scott Hairston took ground balls, shagged fly balls, ran, threw and faced live pitching during batting practice before Wednesday's game. Better for the Padres, Hairston felt good throughout the drills.

"It went really well," said Hairston, who has been on the DL since June 3 with a biceps strain. "I really wasn't hesitant on anything. It was almost like normal BP. I think we'll know a lot more (soon)."

Hairston -- who is hitting .327 with eight homers and 23 RBIs -- said he thinks he'll need to play at least three games during a minor league rehab assignment, though the Padres haven't set a timeline. He is eligible to come off the DL on Thursday, and Black said he could go on assignment soon.

"There's a possibility he's going to be playing this weekend," Black said.

Et cetera

SS Everth Cabrera (wrist) remains on track to come off the 60-day disabled list Friday. Cabrera is hitting .356 with 10 runs in 45 at-bats during a rehab assignment with Single-A Lake Elsinore and Triple-A Portland. … Padres minority owner Troy Aikman was seated in the owner's box. … Manager Bud Black said RHP Kevin Correia will start Sunday against Oakland. … 2B David Eckstein's ninth-inning error on Tuesday night was his first of the season and ended an errorless streak dating to June 30, 2008. He had gone 390 chances and 90 games without making an error.
