SAN DIEGO -- Petco Park will get a temporary facelift in September to accommodate a soccer match.

The Padres and Major League Soccer team Chivas USA will announce Thursday that a Sept. 14 exhibition between Chivas USA and Mexican club Chivas will be played at the Padres' home ballpark.

The Padres will end a 10-game homestand on Sept. 12 and won't return home until Sept. 24. During that period, the pitching mound will be completely removed and later rebuilt to allow for a soccer field.

Padres CEO Jeff Moorad and president Tom Garfinkel didn't return e-mails seeking comment, but both are expected to attend a press conference at Petco Park on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

One club official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Padres believe the venue will be in top form when the team returns.

Recently, the Padres postponed a series of three postgame concerts until after the season concludes because of damage done to the field during a TV awards show on July 23. That event included a 55,000-pound stage, which killed a large area of grass in left field. As a result, the Padres later resodded the affected portion of the field.

The source said the Padres are confident that the soccer match won't do damage to the field because the event won't require any heavy equipment.

This will be the second soccer match hosted by Petco Park. Mexico faced Sweden on Jan. 26, 2005.
