SAN DIEGO -- The Padres will likely be without starting pitchers Chris Young and Jake Peavy at the same time for a second straight season.

Young said on Tuesday afternoon he has been battling right shoulder inflammation during his past four or five starts and he's uncertain if he'll make his next start against Oakland on Friday. He also said trip to the disabled list wasn't out of the question.

Manager Bud Black and general manager KevinTowers indicated there was a strong possibility Young would miss his next start. Over his last five outings, Young is 1-4 with a 5.47 ERA and seven home runs allowed.

"It's definitely aggravated," Young said. "It's reached a point where it's not getting better in between starts and its affecting me out on the mound. We have to change the game plan a bit."

The right-hander -- who is 4-6 with a 5.21 ERA in 14 starts -- said the inflamed shoulder has limited his ability to throw in between starts, something he considers key to his outings. Whereas some pitchers will completely cut out side bullpen sessions late in the season, Young considers them "necessary."

During his start in Los Angeles against the Dodgers last Tuesday, he allowed a career-high four home runs, most of which occurred on location mistakes. On Sunday in Anaheim, Young walked four straight batters as he couldn't lock in.

"I think that along with what's going on in the shoulder is affecting performance to an extent," Young said. "I enjoy doing (bullpens). I find it beneficial to my games. So not being able to do that, having to cut back or eliminate it has been a challenge. … I'm the guy who likes to get a decent workload in, in between starts and I haven't been able to do that at all."

Gregerson to DL

The Padres purchased the contracts of Mike Ekstrom and Josh Banks from Triple-A Portland after demoting Edwin Moreno and placing rookie Luke Gregerson on the DL with right shoulder tendonitis.

Gregerson had allowed one earned run over his last 17 1/ 3 innings through May 13. But the right-hander -- who is 0-3 with a 3.15 ERA in 30 appearances -- hadn't pitched since throwing two innings in the Padres' 18-inning loss to Arizona on June 7.

"After (that) game I had a hard time bouncing back," Gregerson said. "It wasn't going away. I tried to keep throwing through, but it wasn't getting better. I've had similar cases but normally I'd just keep throwing and it would go away. It hasn't gone away so I figured it was time to stop. … I'm not very happy but I've got to think long term."

Hundley improves

Nick Hundley's left wrist was in good enough shape for the catcher to face live pitching for the first time in a week. Hundley was hit by a pitch in Los Angeles last Tuesday and hasn't played since. Black said he was a DL candidate as late as Sunday and the team would review his status before the Seattle series opener.

But Hundley had made good enough progress over 48 hours that the team kept him on its active roster.

"The other day in Anaheim was the most frustrated I've been," Hundley said. "But the more I swing, the looser it gets."

Et cetera

The Padres were at 39 players on the 40-man roster prior to Tuesday's moves. In order to make room for the second purchased contract, the team moved RHP Shawn Hill from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. … OF Scott Hairston (biceps strain) hit in the cages for the first time since he was placed on the DL on June 3. … RHP Jake Peavy (ankle strain) was wearing a boot after removing his cast over the weekend in Anaheim. He said he was hoping to avoid surgery that would keep him out for up to a year. The team said it believes Peavy would miss 4-to-8 weeks. Peavy, who removed the cast so the Padres' training staff could do more maintenance on the ankle, will be re-evaluated after the team's next road trip. … The Padres signed RHP Brian Lawrence to a minor-league deal after he threw six shutout innings for the independent ball-Orange County Flyers. Manager Bud Black said the move was for organizational depth.
