SAN DIEGO-- Tom Garfinkel was announced as the Padres' president and chief operating officer on Wednesday and said he's already got a great platform to work from.

Garfinkel, who was the Arizona Diamondbacks' executive VP and COO until Saturday, said he didn't foresee any immediate changes, including moving in the right field fences at Petco Park or making any changes to the Padres' uniforms.

Garfinkel instead said he wanted to continue focusing on the fan experience.

"I don't believe in change for change-sake," Garfinkel said. "When there's change it'll be relevant and thoughtful … We want to make sure we're paying attention to every detail and listening to the fans."

Garfinkel, who co-owns NASCAR's Hall of Faming racing team with Padres' CEO Jeff Moorad, was credited with helping the Diamondbacks' revenues grow by 25 percent. During his introductory press conference last month, Moorad stressed reconnecting with the team with Mexican baseball fans. Garfinkel said he felt there's room to grow with the market.

"There's certainly an opportunity," Garfinkel said. "I think it needs to be woven into the existing experience. … You want to make everyone feel welcome."

Moreno impresses

After 10 years in the minors and one shoulder surgery, Edwin Moreno admitted he was nervous during his major league debut on Tuesday night. Moreno-- who first pitched for the Texas Rangers' Venezuelan Summer League team in 1998 -- said he had to slow himself down after walking two of the first three hitters he faced. Moreno also fell behind in the count 3 and 1 to Orlando Hudson with Manny Ramirez on deck. But Moreno struck out Hudson with two consecutive changeups before retiring Ramirez on a 3-1 popup.

Manager Bud Black called Moreno's first changeup to Hudson the game's biggest pitch.

"I was very excited and a little nervous," said Moreno, who reminded himself to be confident. "I made myself more secure."

He, in turn, made Hudson and Ramirez look confused.

"He throws his off-speed pitches real good," Hudson said. "He's got great command of his off-speed pitches. He made my (butt) sit down."

Baek off and throwing

Pitcher Cha Seung Baek said he has resumed his throwing program and would like to throw in a bullpen session next week as long as he continues healing from a right forearm strain. Baek was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday, retroactive to March 30. He said he'd seen significant improvement after taking four days off.

"I'm seeing progress," Baek said. "I hope to get loosened up in long toss and hopefully will throw a bullpen next week."

Padres notes

Manager Bud Black said he gave RHP Heath Bell advice on how to handle his new ninth-inning role. Bell, who locked down his third career save on Tuesday, is replacing RHP Trevor Hoffman, the team's closer for the past 16 years. "You're not replacing Trevor," Black said. "You're creating your own footprints." … Tuesday's win was the first time the Padres beat Los Angeles at Petco Park in four tries. The Padres entered Wednesday 26-21 against the Dodgers all-time at Petco.
