The Mt. San Jacinto football team is guaranteed its third consecutive eight-loss season after it fell 54-10 to first-place Los Angeles Harbor in a Mountain Conference game Saturday night.
The Eagles are 4-24 since the start of the 2007 season. Mt. San Jacinto went 1-8 in 2007 (one game was canceled due to a wildfire), and 2-8 in 2008. With this latest loss, the Eagles' fourth straight, Mt. San Jacinto fell to 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the Mountain Conference.
Mt. San Jacinto's only victory this season came over winless Compton.
On Saturday, L.A. Harbor (9-0, 6-0) led 14-0 at halftime before scoring 26 in the third quarter to deliver the knockout punch. Mt. San Jacinto trailed 40-3 going into the final 15 minutes, and the Eagles were down by as many as 51 points at 54-3 in the fourth quarter.
L.A. Harbor outgained Mt. San Jacinto 628-196 in total yards, including a 259-43 advantage on the ground, and had a 35-10 advantage in first downs.
Mt. San Jacinto sophomore quarterback Carmen Boyer (Temecula Valley HS) completed 9-of-22 passes for 64 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. The Eagles' only points came from a third-quarter, 30-yard field goal by Zoltan Riazzo and a 37-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Kevin Newcomb to freshman wide receiver Tyrone Richardson (West Valley HS) late in the fourth quarter.
For L.A. Harbor, quarterback Dominique Blackman completed 23-of-39 passes for 369 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
Mt. San Jacinto has now conceded 49 or more points four times this season.
Men's hoops win 2 of 3
The Mt. San Jacinto men's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the season-opening San Francisco City College Tournament over the weekend before falling to conference rival San Bernardino Valley in Sunday's final.
The Eagles (2-1) opened the 2009-2010 campaign with an 85-79 victory over Porterville in Friday's quarterfinal round, and they beat Santa Rosa 71-62 in Saturday's semifinals.
In the title game, Mt. San Jacinto fell to San Bernardino Valley 89-69.
The Eagles played the tournament without two projected starters, sophomore forwards Jeffrey West and Terrence Williams, each of whom are recovering from knee surgery and will be out another 2-3 weeks, according to head coach Patrick Springer.
Sophomore forward D.J. Wright made the All-Tournament team after he averaged 21.6 points per game over the weekend. In the victory over Porterville, Wright scored a game-high 35 points and added 12 rebounds.
"Whenever we go to these tournaments, we feel like we have to win two and we'd like to win three," Springer said. "Obviously, I'm disappointed in the effort Sunday against San Bernardino. But San Bernardino is playing real well right now, and we have some room for growth."
Soccer winless streak continues
The women's soccer team's winless streak was extended to eight games after a 5-0 loss to Chaffey College on Friday in Menifee.
Freshman goalkeeper Lindsey O'Malley saved 11 shots, but Mt. San Jacinto (2-10-1, 1-9-1) fell apart in the final half hour after holding strong for more than 60 minutes. The Eagles conceded all five goals after the 62nd minute.
Earlier in the week, the Eagles lost 6-1 against Foothill Conference-leading San Bernardino Valley. Mt. San Jacinto is 0-7-1 in its last eight games after starting the season 2-3.
"It's a learning process," Mt. San Jacinto head coach Harry Hutcheson said. "We've progressed the entire season, and the last two games we've done a really good job."
