SAN DIEGO ---- Junior D.J. Gay scored 18 points and teammate Tyrone Shelley added 17 points and nine rebounds in his San Diego State debut as the shorthanded Aztecs men's basketball rallied to beat Cal Baptist 72-57 in an exhibition at Viejas Arena on Tuesday night.

Gay connected on five 3-pointers, while Shelley, a transfer from Pepperdine, converted 7-of-9 attempts from the field.

Cal Baptist, which spent part of last season as the NAIA's No. 1-ranked team, scored the first 12 points of the game and led the majority of the first half. The Aztecs took their first lead on a Kelvin Davis free throw with 41 seconds remaining in the first half and never trailed again.

San Diego State played without top returning scorer Billy White (wrist injury), top returning rebounder Tim Shelton (knee) and junior college transfer Malcolm Thomas (knee).
