Player to watch: LB Andy Schantz

The 6-foot-1, 235 pound junior returns to Qualcomm Stadium for the first time since transferring from San Diego State over the winter. After starting nine games for the Aztecs over the past two seasons, Schantz has made an immediate impact with the Vikings at inside linebacker. His total of 24 tackles is second on the team.

Offense

Mouse Davis, whose Portland State teams were an offensive machine when he was head coach there from 1975-80, has returned to serve as the offensive coordinator for new head coach Jerry Glanville. Davis, 74, is credited with popularizing the run-and-shoot offense -- the pass-happy attack Glanville's teams utilized during his NFL stops with the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons. … This year, the Vikings' offense has been a work in progress, though it seems to be improving after recovering from the shock of losing starting QB Tygue Howland and FB Bobby McClintock in the opener. … After scoring a total of 29 points in two losses to open the season, QB Brian White had a big day in the Vikings' Big Sky Conference-opening 35-24 win over Sacramento State. He threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns, including a 42-yarder in the fourth quarter to Tremayne Kirkland that put Portland State ahead to stay. … The Vikings have allowed 25 sacks in three games. … When the Vikings run -- and that's not entirely often -- they usually give it to senior FB Olaniyi Sobomehin.

Defense

The defensive-minded Glanville has brought his speedy, aggressive, hard-hitting 3-4 scheme to the Pacific Northwest after two years as Hawaii's defensive coordinator. … LB Jordan Senn was named Big Sky defensive player of the week Monday after recording a game-best 11 tackles and returning a fourth-quarter interception 76 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory over Sacramento State. One of the Vikings' senior captains, he leads the team with 28 tackles. … Senior Michael Dorsey has been a menace, tallying 2 1/2 sacks from the free safety position. … The Vikings have been hurt by the run at times, allowing 204 yards on the ground to McNeese State and 153 yards to Sacramento State.
