North County high schools will be well represented when the
college football bowl season kicks off on Dec. 20.
Twenty-two former North County prep players are on bowl rosters,
and fans will get a chance to see them on TV.
The list includes:
- Las Vegas Bowl - - BYU vs. UCLA, Dec. 22 on ESPN: Despite
battling a hamstring injury, Craig Sheppard (San Pasqual) has
emerged as UCLA's No. 2 running back. He has 28 carries for 133
yards. Defensive end Nikola Dragovic (Rancho Bernardo) was a
starter, but has missed much of the season after an appendectomy.
Nate Skaggs (Rancho Bernardo) is the No. 2 center. For BYU, Markell
Steffieri (Torrey Pines), a senior linebacker, is a starter and has
54 tackles (five for losses) and a sack. Tight end Vic So'oto
(Carlsbad) is No. 2 at his position and has 12 receptions for 124
yards.
- Hawaii Bowl - - East Carolina vs. Boise State, Dec. 23 on ESPN:
Receiver/running back Vinny Perretta (La Costa Canyon) was injured
in Boise State's fourth game and is out. Mike Altieri (Vista) is
the Broncos' No. 2 strong-side linebacker.
- Holiday Bowl - - Arizona State vs. Texas, Dec. 27 on ESPN:
Michael Marquardt (Vista) is a starting defensive tackle for the
Sun Devils. He has 28 tackles and was first-team Academic
All-Pac-10 with a 3.31 GPA in urban planning. Travis Goethel
(Vista) is a starting linebacker as a sophomore with 62 tackles
(three for losses) and a sack. Thomas Altieri (Vista), a sophomore,
is the No. 2 center.
- Champ Sports Bowl - - Boston College vs. Michigan State, Dec.
28 on ESPN: Freshman Billy Bennett (Torrey Pines) is the kickoff
man for the Eagles.
- Emerald Bowl - - Maryland vs. Oregon State, Dec. 28 on ESPN:
Quarterback Sean Canfield (Carlsbad) battled injuries down the
stretch but finished the regular season by completing 157-of-272
passes for 1,593 yards and eight TDs. Freshman receiver Darrell
Catchings (Escondido) had 32 catches for 374 yards and a
score.
- Independence Bowl - - Alabama vs. Colorado, Dec. 30 on ESPN:
Colorado has four North County players. Daniel Sanders (El Camino),
a junior, is the starting center. Demetrius Sumler (Cathedral
Catholic), a freshman, has 100 carries for 335 yards and four TDs.
Junior receiver Cody Crawford (Torrey Pines) has seven catches for
73 yards. Freshman defensive end Marquez Herrod (San Pasqual) is
listed No. 2 at his position.
- Humanitarian Bowl - - Georgia Tech vs. Fresno State, Dec. 31 on
ESPN2: Junior Jake Jorde (Fallbrook) is listed No. 2 at strong
safety for the Bulldogs. He has 19 tackles, two pass breakups and
two deflections. Freshman linebacker Robert Schenck (Mission Hills)
is also on the Fresno State roster.
- Armed Forces Bowl - - California vs. Air Force, Dec. 31 on
ESPN: Keith Madsen (San Marcos) is a backup tight end for the
Falcons. He has played in 10 games and had five catches for 49
yards and two TDs.
- Capital One Bowl - - Missouri vs. Arkansas, Jan. 1 on Fox:
Tight end Jon Gissinger (Poway) is the long snapper for Missouri
and is on all the kick teams. Jake Harry (Torrey Pines/Palomar
College) is the No. 2 punter for the Tigers.
Football
- Colorado State offensive lineman Nick Allotta (Ranch Bernardo)
was named second-team All-Mountain West Conference.
- Stanford kicker Derek Belch (Torrey Pines) was named honorable
mention All-Pac-10.
- Quarterback Donnie McKillop (Poway) led Middlebury College of
Vermont to a 7-1 record and the conference championship. He was
named the conference's rookie of the year. He finished his freshman
season with 129 completions, 1,379 yards and 11 TDs.
- Defensive lineman Alex Doubt (La Costa Canyon) played this
season at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania.
- Rory Baird (San Pasqual) finished his freshman season at
Claremont-Mudd with 14 tackles, a pair of sacks and a blocked kick.
He was named the team's outstanding defensive newcomer. Andrew
Papilla (Torrey Pines), a senior, was also a lineman on that team,
finishing with four tackles.
- Bryan Frito (San Pasqual), a freshman at Occidental, scored his
first two college touchdowns in the season's final game, a 67-61
loss to Whittier. The second TD was a 54-yard run.
Men's water polo
- Spencer Rodman (Carlsbad) earned a NCAA championship ring as
part of the California team that beat Navy in the semifinals, then
upset USC to win the title. Rodman, who also swims for the Bears,
finished the season with three goals, four assists and three
steals.
- Mike Mule (Carlsbad) scored three goals at the NCAA finals as
Navy lost to California in the first round, then beat Loyola
Marymount in the third-place game. He was named to the
all-tournament team. Mule finished with 75 goals this season and
143 in his career.
Women's volleyball
- Carlie Lloyd (Fallbrook) has started all 33 games as a freshman
for California. The Golden Bears beat Nebraska on Saturday to
advance to the NCAA semifinals against Penn State. A setter, Lloyd
has 93 kills, 1,515 sets, 38 aces and 234 digs.
- Juliann Faucet (Westview) had 16 kills, but No. 3 Texas lost to
No. 6 USC in an NCAA Regional match. Faucet finished her freshman
season with a team-high 429 kills. She was named first-team All-Big
12 and the freshman of the year.
- Rachelle Johnson (Torrey Pines) concluded her career at UCLA by
posting 13 kills in a NCAA Regional loss to No. 1 Stanford. She was
named to the all-regional team, finishing the season with 392
kills. Jade Machado (La Costa Canyon), a junior setter/libero, led
the Bruins with 121 games played. Freshman setter Jaz Machado (La
Costa Canyon) played in about half the team's games.
- Lauren Kellerman (Escondido) finished her junior season at UC
Irvine with 446 kills on a team that went 20-11. She now has 1,235
career kills.
- Rachel Dyer (La Costa Canyon) led BYU to the NCAA Regional
final before the Cougars lost to Penn State. Dyer, a junior, was
named to the all-regional team. She finished the season with 361
kills.
- Jen Michaelson (Tri-City Christian), a sophomore outside
hitter, finished the season at Point Loma Nazarene with 156 kills
and 15 blocks. Hannah Haskell (Fallbrook), a freshman outside
hitter/defensive specialist, had 45 kills. The team lost in the
NAIA Regionals to Concordia.
Cross country
- Freshman A.J. Acosta (El Camino) was named second-team
All-Pac-10 and the conference's newcomer of the year. He finished
12th in the Pac-10 meet and 24th in the West Regional.
Women's soccer
- Jillian Foss (Carlsbad) had an outstanding sophomore season in
goal for Vanguard University. She started all 18 games on a team
that finished 8-6-4. A transfer from San Diego State, she had 73
saves, allowed just 16 goals, had an 0.87 goals-against average and
posted nine shutouts. She was an All-Golden State Athletic
Conference pick and a third-team NAIA All-American.
- Rachel Buehler (Torrey Pines), a senior defender at Stanford,
was a finalist for the U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year
-- one of only five players still alive in the online voting that
closed Friday. In addition, she was named to the ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-America first team -- posting a 4.0 GPA in human
biology -- first-team All-Pac-10, and is a pool player on the U.S.
women's national team. She led a Stanford defense that posted nine
shutouts and had an 0.69 goals-against average. Stanford lost 2-0
to Connecticut on Friday in the third round of the NCAA tournament,
ending the season 15-3-5. The Cardinal was 53-22-13 in Buehler's
four seasons.
- Cal State Fullerton junior defender Jenae Gibbens (Mt. Carmel)
has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team.
A third-team selection, Gibbens was one of 33 athletes honored
nationally for their achievements on the field and in the
classroom. A marketing major with a 3.96 GPA, Gibbens was the Big
West Conference defensive player of the year. She helped lead the
Titans to a third straight Big West Conference title and a berth in
the NCAA tournament, where they lost to UCLA in the first
round.
- Casey Schostag (Valley Center), a junior defender, started all
22 games and had three assists for Cal State Fullerton. Leslie
Munoz (Fallbrook) played in 20 games for the Titans, and Brianna
Buffington (Mt. Carmel) played in every game and had five goals and
an assist.
- Kelsea Kakadelas (La Costa Canyon), a sophomore defender,
played in all 23 games for a BYU team that won the Mountain West
Conference championship, but lost to No. 7-ranked Texas in the
first round of the NCAA tournament.
- Cammie Burke (Torrey Pines), a freshman defender at Pepperdine,
was named honorable mention All-West Coast Conference and was named
to the conference's all-freshman team.
- Amanda Rupp (La Costa Canyon), a junior forward, led Pepperdine
in scoring with five goals and five assists.
Men's soccer
- San Diego State's Kraig Chiles (Poway) led the Aztecs in games
started (19), goals (8), points (20) and shots on goal (26) and was
a first-team All-Pac-10 selection.
- San Diego State sophomore defender Jamel Wallace (Oceanside)
was a honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection on a team that allowed
just 22 goals in 19 matches. He also scored three goals.
- Adrian Brambila (Fallbrook) had a fine freshman season at NCAA
Division III University of Dubuque. He started 17 of 19 games,
scoring two goals with three assists for a team that went 10-8-1.
The team earned the last spot in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference tournament, losing to Central College in a shootout.
Brambila assisted on the tying goal with under 3 minutes to play
and scored a goal in the shootout.
Men's golf
San Diego State sophomore Aaron Goldberg (La Costa Canyon) shot
a 12-under-par 201 over three rounds at the 33rd Western Refining
College All-American Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas, to finish the
fall season with a second-place finish. He had rounds of 66, 67 and
68, finishing three shots behind Webb Simpson of Wake Forest.
Simpson won the event with birdies on 15, 16 and 17. Past
All-American Classic winners include David Duval, Davis Love III
and Tiger Woods. Goldberg and the Aztecs return to action on Jan.
28 in the PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson.
Baseball
- Wake Forest first baseman Allan Dykstra (Rancho Bernardo) has
been named to the watch list for the 2008 Brooks Wallace Player of
the Year Award as announced by the College Baseball Foundation.
Dykstra hit .310 with 18 homers and 62 RBIs as a sophomore last
season.
- Left-hander Troy Cate (Fallbrook), who was released by the St.
Louis Cardinals at the end of the season, has signed a minor-league
contract with the Oakland A's.
