SAN DIEGO - A day that began with six unsigned Chargers draft choices ended with everyone in the fold.
The Chargers reached contract agreements with six rookies on Monday, including first-round draft pick Craig Davis and second-rounder Eric Weddle, to guarantee that every player will be under contract when the rookies report to training camp by tonight's 9 p.m. deadline. The rookies will practice for the first time on Wednesday.
According to a team official, it's the first time the Chargers have had all players signed before the start of training camp since 1997.
"Wow, I hadn't heard how long for the Chargers, but this is my first time," said A.J. Smith, the Chargers' general manager since 2003. "I've never had this before, so I'm enjoying it."
Davis, a receiver from LSU, agreed to a contract that could be worth roughly $11 million over five years if he meets all incentive clauses. The 30th overall selection in April's NFL draft will receive about $5.5 million in guaranteed money.
Weddle, a safety from Utah, agreed to a four-year deal. So did the other four players who agreed to terms on Monday - linebacker Anthony Waters (third round), receiver Legedu Naanee (fifth), linebacker Brandon Siler (seventh) and cornerback Paul Oliver (fourth-round supplemental draft pick).
The flurry means the Chargers have signed all seven of their draft picks. Tight end Scott Chandler, a fourth-round pick in April, signed a four-year contract last month.
"This particular year was a good year." Smith said. "Everybody is signed, everybody is happy. All the negotiations were terrific. I'm going to enjoy the fact that on the first day we go out there, we don't have to come off the practice field and answer the questions - 'How are negotiations? Are you optimistic? When do you think he's going to come in?'
"I'm glad they are all in time. That's great."
Weddle told the North County Times last week that he was hoping to avoid a holdout. He ended up being the last draft pick to come to terms.
The Chargers announced the signings of five draft picks on Monday afternoon, and Weddle reached an agreement about 3 1/2 hours later.
"I knew it was going to get done, whether it was (Monday night or today)," Weddle said. "I figured it would get done, just by the way the Chargers do their deals. They wait until the last day to do it. I was optimistic and I'm really excited to get it done and move on toward camp.
"You don't want to hold out, but you also want a fair deal - both on the Chargers' side and on my side. Once we felt it was a fair deal, it was a go from there."
Showing up to training camp on time - the team's veterans report Friday, and the first full-squad practice is Saturday --ñ should help Davis and Weddle in their quest to contribute immediately.
Davis will be given ample opportunity to show he's ready to make an impact. The Chargers released veteran Keenan McCardell in the offseason, and the expected starters are Eric Parker and Vincent Jackson.
Weddle is behind Clinton Hart at strong safety. He knew a late arrival would diminish his chances of pushing for a starting role.
"It's good to get this done," Weddle said. "Now I can go out there and focus on getting better and helping this team win a championship."
The rookies practice once on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
In other news, the Chargers have halted season-ticket sales for this season and will sell a limited number of individual tickets to 2007 home games on Wednesday at 8 a.m. on chargers.com. The team also has formed a waiting list for fans interested in future season tickets.
